Hi, This is muchi.

It finally feels like autumn has reached Japan. Cool mornings and nights are heaven. I’d forgotten how nice it is to walk around without breaking a sweat.

In the peak of summer, I can’t tell you how many times I thought, “Screw it—I’ll just walk around buck naked!”🍌🍆

Maybe that feeling is stronger because I just got back from tropical Thailand, but honestly, at this point I’m not even sure which place is more tropical.

I’m also genuinely thrilled that I can flush toilet paper straight down the toilet again. In Thailand you’re not supposed to, so being able to flush feels like a miracle. That might actually be the biggest lesson from this trip.

Do we Japanese have an unhealthy fixation on toilets? We pour so much energy into developing and exporting toilets and bidet seats (washlets). Even at this year’s Expo there was a stretch where the news talked about nothing but the bathrooms—how easy or hard they were to use, inflated labor/installation costs, the design, you name it. The people who designed the toilets even became minor celebrities.🚾

So really, can you blame us for constantly turning our lovely heroines into “meat toilets” in our stories? It’s practically cultural destiny!
