After my bodybuilding contest, I spent a few days up north in Abashiri.
Where I live, the temperature can top 40°C, but Abashiri didn’t even break 30°C—there were even days when I felt chilly in long sleeves, which made it perfect for letting my body recover.

I took a break from training for a while and, between work sessions, enjoyed some fishing. This place is a rockfish paradise.

That said, this used to be the kind of area where you didn’t need air-conditioning even in midsummer, but in the past few years that’s changed and more places have started installing AC.
Because people—including local appliance shops—weren’t really familiar with how to install AC units, there have been lots of mistakes and resulting trouble. For folks like us who can’t live without air-con, it’s hard to even imagine. Kinda fascinating, honestly.
Abashiri is the southernmost spot where drift ice reaches the coast, and I can’t help wondering whether we’ll still be able to see it in the years ahead.
I’ve also seen reports of extreme heat around the world leading to more illnesses and even deaths. Please take care, everyone.
As for me—nothing beats chilling in a cool room, flipping through a dirty mag, and having a good jerk!🍆💦
