I believe every region has its own traditional local dishes—some tied to specific countries, others to broader regions, or sometimes to even smaller, local areas. Some are staple foods, while others might be sweets or snacks.
Personally, I really love these kinds of regional specialties now. But thinking back, I realize I didn’t enjoy those traditional foods much when I was a child—and neither did most of my friends. We all preferred things like cake or fast food. But somewhere along the way, my tastes changed.
Take mochi, for example. It’s a traditional Japanese sweet loved by older generations, but many children find it unappealing. I think the image of a sweet grandma kindly offering traditional snacks, only for her grandchild to turn them down, is sadly common—and a little heartbreaking.
It made me wonder: do other countries also have traditional dishes that are part of their cultural identity, but aren’t exactly popular with kids? I imagine there must be many such examples.
As someone who grew up abroad, I’ll never get to experience those childhood feelings firsthand, and that makes me all the more curious.
If you have any examples from your own country or region, I’d love to hear about them!

I guess you could say it just has this old-fashioned feel to it. That subtle sweetness is exactly what makes it so great for adults, but maybe that’s why kids find it a bit underwhelming. I had never heard of cornbread before! That actually makes a lot of sense. Something that’s too chewy or dense might definitely not be a hit with children!

The taro flavor and matcha flavor are so good! It's chewy and it isn't too overly sweet like many American candies. I think the most American thing I can think of is probably cornbread. I don't see it anywhere else in the world because the key ingredient to grow it is corn as the name implies and it's all over the US. Most children don't like it as far as I know and lots of elderly people like eating it. It's can be really dry and difficult to swallow without water if someone makes it improperly.
