As far as i am concerned you are doing great!πŸ˜πŸ‘

Simone Spinozzi

i am not offended just sometimes concerned about my progress as an artist

Hatton Slayden

I hope i did not offend you. I'm just trying to say.. even if in a clumsy way... thst you are already doing a great job and while everybody can improve there is no need to reinvent oneself. πŸ˜…πŸ‘

Simone Spinozzi

thank you i will keep all this in mind

Hatton Slayden

There is nothing wrong with self criticism, as long as it does not become self-damaging. Problem is that you can't know if self-criticism is self-damaging until you've passed the threshold and by a lot and by that time you need therapy. πŸ˜…πŸ˜ž In general it is good to have a critic eye, but don't feel self conscious about your very own base art. True: many western artists in the past had what here in italy we call "the stink under the nose" when looking at anime style, but on the other hand: 1) anime style was derived from western art and made it so that it would be quick in order to mass produce animations and/or black & white comics for quick and easy printing. I understand when one tells me it's "flat" but when you start adding color the way you do any pretence of "flatness" can be thoroughly thrown out of the window. 2) anime style went full circle by now inspiring western artists exactly to do what anime style was useful for in the first place: quick mass production of easily distinguishable characters. So... why dis it? I see no reasons, personally. The same way as i see not reasons in killing somebody over whichever art style comes more natural to that one person. Believe me: people can get critically acclaimed AND publically acclaimed while producing literal πŸ’© like Piero Manzoni's dadaistic production or metaphorical πŸ’© like Go Nagai which has been writing the same one story for several decades, never finishing even one single comic and... well look at his art. So, basically people can get away with anything and swim in money. What brought me to you... was your art. Even the stuff which you say was really immature. Because i already saw something in there.

Simone Spinozzi

i think were i become so self-conscious about my work flow is from two main sources. the first was from when i tried to get into the concept art industry and at that time the vast majority of them said "you are not allowed to do things that way at all" now i see most of them do the exact same thing i do but the problem is the idea stuck the second is from fellow artists saying it is "technically good but stiff and lifeless"

Also, personally speaking i don't really understand why are you so self conscious about paintovers. First of all they are your characters which you modeled yourself and second you redraw the picture almost from scratch. When you told me before that it was evident that the folio of the barbarian with the cat lady was something which showed tour inexperience. Sure it did in the sense that you tried to stick to the original 3d models and even the colors felt little more than just taken from the 3d render and painted over a little bit. They had that feel. But as far as i am concerned this mixed use of 3d models and painting or your "manga" freeform style... They are all part of the charm. You want to improve? Sure. One never ends improving and experimenting. But remember that i was not drawn here because you imitated the art style of famous authors. I was drawn here because what i saw was something unique which was delivered much better than other similar attempts i saw in the past. I saw that you put effort in making models and rigging them and making drawings with them and you put a lot of efforts which other people just did not care putting into it. And yes. Seeing you put effort in here is still very good. But don't worry about thinking that you have to cover for stuff which was all part of what drew me here. When i say "this is a paintover" i don't mean to say "this is inferior" i want to be sure you understand that. Okay?

Simone Spinozzi

The mushy feel was purely due to the fact that it was never more than a sketch. (I think) and undefined lines give a mushy sense of what the end will be. I am very bad at understanding if there is anything to go on from a sketch. Sometimes i get the general direction the picture will have, but more than that for me it is rather difficult. I hate it when there is a commission and it looks very good except at the last moment i get that a detail that would have gone one way went in a different way.

Simone Spinozzi

sorry i meant harder to tell it's a paintover. remember how you were a bit unsure if Mar introspection was a paintover? i feel that was due to the color

Hatton Slayden

I think you mean "easier" (i hope) but i meant that you shifted it from front facing to facing upwards. πŸ€·πŸ˜‰πŸ‘

Simone Spinozzi

the third eye is still there. and like with Mar introspection. once colored it will be harder to tell

Hatton Slayden

i know that this is traced and the other was free hand but i like the new character design more in all ways except for one. BRING BACK THE THIRD EYE DAMMIT! πŸ€£πŸ‘
