The Next Video Series

Hi everyone,

I'm currently writing a video series that is an introduction to Marx's social theory and theory of history, which have come to be known as dialectical and historical materialism. These aspects of Marx are widely misunderstood and people tend to repeat what later Marxists like Stalin said as if it were an accurate description of Marx. The result is that Marx is, at best, misrepresented as an extreme technological and economic determinist. My hope is that a clear and accessible overview of what Marx thought will enable people to evaluate his actual ideas and figure out what they think about them. It will also make it easier to establish where Marx and anarchists like Kropotkin and Malatesta agree and disagree.

The series is being co-written with Paul Raekstad, who is an academic Marx specialist and runs the youtube channel red plateaus. The core of the scripts are already written and I'm largely adding in textual evidence and making stuff super clear to newcomers who are not familiar with Marx.

I do not know how long it will take to finish the video series but am hoping that the first part, an overview of dialectical materialism, will be ready to record by the end of June. Once this work is complete I'll finally be able to return to my other Marx project, explaining in too much detail how he became a communist and what communism was like in the 1840s.
