2D or VR?

Are you playing on a monitor, or do you play with VR equipment?

Comments

My response to your survey: none of the above. I do not play at all, but rather enjoy non-interactive VR videos. I think most oy your scenes do not really require interaction, for example if you are tied to a chair and have to endure what happens to you anyway. BTW: Is there any chance you might release more VR videos any time soon?

You will want to aim for a minimum fps as close to 90 as you can get, that will help avoid one source of nausea. That's not a peak of 90, or even an average, but a minimum. The difference in resolutions between headsets is a lot like the difference between 1080p and 4K on a monitor. The difference can be vast and the work the graphics card has to do scales up faster than the pixles do. So you need to find a balance of features on a headset and a PC that can run it all smoothly. It's not an impossible task, VR has been around for a while now and some googling will show people enjoying it on the 1000 series nvidia cards and even older! That said as the resolution of the headset ramps up so does the demand. I have a Reverb G2 and a RTX3090 and I have to drop the resolution in most games before it can hit a stable 90fps. Start with the headset, what features do you want? Then look for benchmarks with that headset and pay attention to the cards being used in the benchmarks. Then start comparing those cards to your other options in benchmarks. For a modern headset 4K is probably a better resolution to compare on that 1080p or 2K. The 3 main options at the moment are the Vale Index for wide FoV and amazing controllers, the Reverb G2 for the sharp image and the Quest 2 for being cable free. There are others on the horizon and they all have their cons too. Others too that might not be as good as the top 3 but hey, they might have just the right mix of features for you so keep an open mind.

I have a severely newbie question, and maybe this isn't the best place to answer. What are the recommended PC specs for VR? What is some good gear to get? And I haven't build a PC in a long time but I've been saving for a new rig. Any suggestions?
