Changing from Per Creation to Subscription Billing

Hello, my lovely Softies and Galoshies!

The time is nearing to me to switch from Per Creation/Per Video billing to the more typical Subscription Billing. Patreon is pushing this change down the line, but the more I looked into it and how they've changed the migration process, I feel that this is the way forward for my Patreon sooner rather than later.

So, what does that mean? Here are some answers to questions I'm sure you'll have:

Will I be charged more?

⚠️⚠️⚠️ NO! You will pay the same amount that you are paying now. Basically, the tiers will have an updated price for new patrons, but for current patrons, whatever your current monthly payment is, that will stay the same. ⚠️⚠️⚠️

For example, the Softies tier will be changed to $7/month rather than $1/video. But if your monthly maximum was 1, and so you've been paying $1/month, you will continue paying $1/month!

However, if you edit or delete your membership after the migration, then when you change tiers, or rejoin it will be at the full new monthly price.

What will happen to the current tiers?

The Softies and Galoshies tiers will be split into 4 tiers as follows:

Plus one more tier:

What tier will I get moved to?

⚠️⚠️⚠️ If you are on the Softies tier, you will be migrated to the $7 tier so that you retain all current perks you are used to having! If you are on the Galoshies tier, you will be migrated to the $35 tier with full perks as well! ⚠️⚠️⚠️

And remember, you won't be charged more than you currently are paying, with your monthly maximum respected, unless you change tiers, or delete your membership and return later. For example, if you're paying for $1/video on the Softies tier, and your monthly max is 1, you will still be paying $1/month when you are migrated to the new tier. If your monthly max is 4, you will be paying $4/month, etc. You will not be charged full price for the new tier because your previous payment is being held for you as a current patron!

When will I get charged each month?

For all current patrons, you will continue to be charged on the 1st of the month. If you delete your membership and rejoin later, you will be charged on the day of the month you joined. For example, if in the future you delete your membership, return later, and start your new subscription on the 15th of the month, you'll get charged every 15th day of the month.

When is this happening?

In the first week of October, after payments have gone through on the 1st, my Patreon will be switched to Subscription billing. This means that all new patrons will be joining at the new prices. For current patrons, you will see your bill reflect the change on November 1st. And another reminder, your new bill will still be the current amount that you are paying now. That means in November, you will still be paying the same price per month that you are currently paying, until you change tiers, or delete your membership and come back later.

Do I have to do anything?

Nope! The migration will happen automatically.

What will the new tier names be?

I was thinking of doing something simple like Baby Softies, Softies, Baby Galoshies, Galoshies. But if you have any tier name suggestions, I'm very open to that! It'd be fun to hear any ideas y'all have so you can be included in this process :)

Why are you doing this before it's required?

In the past, if you changed from Per Creation to Per Month/Subscription billing, they simply edited the regular tier prices to be the same exact price but monthly instead. So for the $1 tier, anyone who was paying for multiple videos per month, it would all get cut down to $1, and this would cause a drastic change in my income which is scary. Because that would require the tier price to be increased, you would have been jump scared with a new price all of a sudden and many people would probably leave.

But, now that they have updated the migration process to retain the current monthly payments for current patrons, I feel a lot more comfortable making this change.

There are a lot of features that will be accessible to me once the change is made, for example, Charging Up Front. My content is fairly unprotected without that feature which really sucks.

Plus, a lot of people get confused on how the tiers work and either give up or freak out when they get the bill and didn't realize it was per VIDEO and not per MONTH pricing. Or that when they would end their membership due to financial reasons, and would get charged immediately for that month's content, not understanding that you are always charged for the content that was made during that billing cycle, not for future content. It's just confusing and upsetting for people!

TL;DR: It's easier for patrons to understand and I will be able to charge up front to protect my content.

I have more questions...

Feel free to leave a comment below! You can DM me if you wish, just leave a comment to let me know you DMed me and that will be a higher guarantee I see your message sooner lol!

Anyway, I really hope that clears things up and that no one is scared about the change! I was very careful to ask lots of questions to the Patreon team to make sure that this will be a very easy migration for everyone and that your budget is not going to implode! <3

It was really important to me to have the transition be as smooth as possible! 🥺

I appreciate the care taken to ensure that current subscribers aren't hit with a higher bill out of the blue

I was planning on upgrading to the galoshies tier for streams soon, but I and a lot of my peers definitely can’t justify $7 a month on a Patreon subscription, let alone $35. I understand that I’ll continue to pay $1, but…this just creates a really high financial barrier for entry for a lot of us in tighter spots that would still like to support you. It also puts everyone on the $1 tier in a weird spot. We either give you $5 now out of FOMO, with no way to edit it going forward without losing our membership- Even updating our card changes the membership cost, apparently. What happens when, like everyone else, I need to replace my debit card? :( I feel as though I’m being made to either support a decision I don’t agree with, or lose out on reasonably priced exclusive content forever. I’m going to be honest, I’m really not in support of this change. This may just be the broke college kid in me, but it really isn’t something I or others can afford. Please rethink your pricing structure. A jump from $7-$35 vs. $1-$5 is- I mean it’s ridiculous, frankly. Edit: Went ahead and upgraded, but it’s pretty rough that when my card expires or I need to order a new one, I’ll be forced to pay you $35 or lose access forever. This is an uncool change.

I sent Patreon support a message asking to clarify this and I will let you know! I know that changing your payment method will lead to the new pricing, but I'm going to get clarification on whether just updating the expiration date counts.

wimpwomp

Hey, sorry if I'm making you repeat yourself but, am I right in understanding that when my current card expires and I have to add a new one, then I'll be moved to the new price?

Liam Oh No Oh Geez

Your current tier is the Galoshies tier, so you will be transferred to the $35 tier which has all of the current perks! No one is going to lose any perks in the migration. Whatever your current monthly payment is will remain the same. See the section: What tier will I be on?

wimpwomp

Im not going anywhere if i can help it Bekah, not a chance! Sadly though i'll have to stay at my present tier which means no more Q&A or exclusive vids cause the money i spend on it is just my "lunch" or bonus money and i split that with you and Seafoam Kitten. I completely get it though, you gotta do what you need to do. I still expect to see you doing ASMR when you're 85!😉

When I asked specifically about updating payment method, they replied that editing the membership will lead to the new subscription billing price. So I think that's the answer.

wimpwomp

Right, but I don't think that say, just updating the expiry date on a card would do that, if that makes sense. When I had to update my card last time, it was still treated as though it was the same card, because it had the same number. That's what I've been trying to find out.

Josh & Barkley

Basically it's going to maintain a little spot for people who maintain their membership as is. But because the system is fully changing to subscription billing, it is not going to be able to be changed and maintain the previous price.

wimpwomp

It's not just about deleting your membership, it's about editing it, for example changing tiers.

wimpwomp

I'm not entirely sure that it is, is the thing. You can edit your payment method and transfer memberships to the new one, so you're *technically not* leaving the membership you had at all?

Josh & Barkley

From what I can tell, because editing your payment method is part of the edit your membership page, I am going to assume that yes, editing your payment method will switch you to the new prices. I will edit the post!

wimpwomp

Did you manage to figure out if existing members will also be forced into the new prices when they have to update their payment methods, or is it just if the membership completely goes away?

Josh & Barkley

Thank you so much!

wimpwomp

do what you need to do! been watching your vids since 2013/14, glad to be able to support
