EX MACHINA (2014 – sci-fi): I'm not sure it’s worth mentioning this, since it was JUST on a poll and almost won. (Maybe this means it’ll get a reaction soon?) Anyway, just in case it falls under the radar again, I wanted to keep it in the conversation. Small cast movie starring Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac (General Hux and Poe Dameron from the Star Wars sequel trilogy in a bit of a role reversal). Kind of disturbing, and I'm not sure it would be Mom’s cup of tea. But I’d at least like Storm and Kim to watch it. GATTACA (1997 – sci-fi): I’ve mentioned this one a ton in the past. I can almost promise you guys would appreciate it. Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and Uma Thurman. Contemplative, noir tone. Haunting score that is reminiscent of the music from “ARRIVAL.” One of those “in the near future” movie premises. LAST NIGHT IN SOHO (2021 – Horror, Period Piece): Edgar Wright wrote/directed this, and it might be interesting to see how his style has progressed from movies like Shawn of the Dead. Thomasin McKenzie (from JoJo Rabbit) and Anya Taylor-Joy (from everything these days) co-star. CRUELLA (2021 – Comedy, Family Appropriate): Emma Stone stars. Oddly, this has a lot of similarities with SOHO in terms of setup and sensibilities. Cruella has been inaccurately lumped in with other Disney “live action remakes,” but it really only is vaguely related to 101 Dalmatians. It’s really its own story and separate world. 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (2016 – Mild Horror, Thriller, Mystery): This movie does not get the acknowledgment it deserves. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (who later went onto do “Prey”). Maybe people were expecting it to be a direct sequel to the 2008 movie simply titled “Cloverfield,” and when it turned out to be a totally separate story, people were resentful. I don’t know. But it’s a good, self-contained story in its own right. I also think it’s better to mentally separate this from the 2008 movie. That way you’re not constantly trying to guess the plot based on a false assumption the two stories are related. Anyway, this is about a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who gets in a car accident, then wakes up in the basement of grizzled, survivalist John Goodman who claims he saved her life.
