Ah. I wouldn't say it's cowardice, I would say it's market strategy. Which I don't really have an opinion about, as long as there's a range of products to choose from (ie explicit as well as non explicit lgbtq). But I don't like people ignoring the reality of it- both that the relationship could work, and that it could just be platonic and nothing else, and also that yes, it does classify as a form of queerbating- for an agenda.
