Re:Zero Episodes 12 + 13 Early Access - Ladies and Knights

Welcome to a world of grandeur and riches, titles and positions, forms and etiquette. If you do not understand the ways of the high court, remain as neutral as possible and avoid conflicts and entanglements above all. Observe and be wary, but charming. Under no circumstances do anything to embarrass your host or invite opportunity for scorn. Follow these simple guidelines and your first experiences in high society are sure to be pleasant. :)

All true but people will always choose to disregard things that go against their bias. I'm also an Emilia soldier all the way, even if Rem is a really cool character to bring some relevant stuff in regard to Subaru's character as we go. All the characters are flawed in their own ways anyway so it's not like there's a character better than the other purely based on how they are, in the protagonist's faction/sphere of acquaintances. I'm just a person who respects the feelings of each character and to whom they're aimed at.

I read it and it all makes sense. Thanks for sharing

If he does a double episode next week.. it will be interesting. iykyk

No. I've watched both seasons. I've just never finished episode 13. I just skip it.

@eternalize lmao

Greg_

I wrote it and I wouldn’t read it lmao Yeah I saw it popped back up at some point. I think when I added the part about Emilia at the end, YouTube didn’t like the word “die”

KhioneB

I ain't reading allat (p.s. your comment is still on YT)

-I posted this comment on the YT video as well, but I think I said a no-no word because now I can't find it. So I'm posting it here hoping Patreon doesn't Nuke it as well- I have been waiting to give my thoughts on the show until now, but I think now is a good time to share at least part of them. (I'm so sorry for how long this is) Episode 13 is Part 1 of why I think the title "The Meaning of Courage" is crucial to understanding both Subaru, and the series as a whole. In "The Meaning of Courage" we're given what might be, up to this point, Subaru at his most truly Heroic. After the traumatic events of his previous attempts to survive the mansion, the culmination of all the different realizations throughout his trials leads him to one final horrific scenario. There is a monster in the village. Yet, at this point, the branching path that he took means that this doesn't actually pose any danger to him. He's made friends with Rem and Ram, he's avoided being cursed, he's gotten closer to Emilia, he's let go of the weight that had built upon his shoulders. He is free. Much like at the capital, he can choose to turn away, and live his happy life. This doesn't affect him. Except it does. He knows the people that live in the village, he's gotten to befriend them. He knows the kids by name at this point, and is aware of their dreams (albeit silly ones) for the future. And this knowledge means he can't leave things as they are. He has to help. For the safety of the people of the village, for the kid's future, and because it's the right thing to do. But most importantly, because it's what he wants to do. And so, with quaking hands, he gathers the resolve to swallow his fears and chase after the kids in the forest. Because he wants to see them again, he wants to exercise with them again. He "keeps [his] promises, and [makes] sure others keep theirs". And, so trusting Rem to help him through it, he ventures forth with her at his side. Compared to that, during episodes 12 and 13 we're given someting very different. The things that trouble Subaru are petty, self indulgent, and meaningless. He misinterprets Julius' chivalry as flirting. He sees himself as the savior meant to get the pretty girl out of trouble. He can't understand how Emilia could possibly be okay if he isn't there keeping an eye on her. He sees his promise to her as secondary to his own desire to "protect" the girl with a spirit that can seemingly destroy the world if he pleases. And so, with complete disregard as to how his actions may affect what is clearly an incredibly important meeting, he shatters the first of his promises, and follows Emilia to the meeting. Then, after witnessing Emilia valiantly advocating for herself, he places no trust in her own ability to handle the situation and begins to speak for her. He then ignores her pleas to be quiet, insults an entire chamber full of knights, spits on Julius' attempt to make him see his arrogance even after Julius was able to set aside the lesson he was cooking long enough to acknowledge the genuine nature of Subaru's feelings toward Emilia, and makes a fool of himself, and Emilia's entire goal. Only to then accept Julius' challenge, immediately resort to underhanded tactics, and even breaks promise number 2, using magic once again. Not for any grand significance, but simply because he doesn't like Julius. Which is apparently more important than either of the promises he's made to Emilia. And we could argue about Emilia's role in all of it. Maybe she should've told him what was happening at the meeting. Maybe she should have let him come along. Maybe she should have been honest about why she didn't want him along. Maybe she should have done a thousand other things different. But the thing is, she should have to. Because regardless of how we as viewers, or Subaru as the "protagonist" feels about it. It's none of Subaru's god damn business. And the only thing he should have done was stay out of it. It's in this episode, and more specifically in the last minutes of it, that I see a big diversion in people's reactions and opinions. Some legitimately hating Subaru, some saying Emilia is being unreasonable. Some sympathising with Subaru's struggle. And some seeing this episode as evidence of Emilia being undeserving of Subaru's affection. But here's the thing: The bedside scene physically hurt me the first time I saw it. Becuase I saw myself in Subaru. I've been the one to give too much, when nothing was asked of me, and then expect my unwanted intervention to be seen the way I saw it. And in retrospect, I hate that version of myself. Because all I was doing was giving those around me treatment I wished I could receive, expecting them to understand those desires without voicing them, then becoming petulant and self centered when my expectations were not met. But I had no right to place my expectations on the shoulders of those around me. And neither does Subaru. And from that unfortunately deeply personal perspective, I think Subaru can be more accurately understood. What we saw in him in episode 13 was not courage, it was not bravery, it was not righteousness. It was jealousy, narcissism, greed, arrogance. Nothing that he did came from a desire to do the right thing, only the need sate his desires. And when the results of his actions are piled up before him, absent is any of the courage of episode 9. Instead he places the burden on Emilia's shoulders. Not, "I wanted to do this", instead the very different "I did this for you". And when that doesn't work, he spits in her face all the things he feels he's done to deserve her. As if saying, "I saved your life, now you belong to me". This is perhaps the most honest version of Subaru we have seen. And also the ugliest. Not courageous. But simply, pathecally, human. Scared. Hurt. Uncertain. Flawed. There is a greater point I want to make here, but I think that will be better made as more of the story progresses. For now, I will add to the small list of things I want to be kept in mind as we watch the show: #1: The title of episode 9: The Meaning of Courage #2: Emilia's Line: "For me? It was for you, wasn't it?" P.S. A more light hearted, but equally important note. I know Rem is the fan favorite, and that episode 13 is often used as evidence of Emilia bring a shit waifu, but I disagree on both counts. Rem was there when Subaru promised to stay put at the inn. And all it took was Subaru staring at her for Rem to completely disregard that promise and let Subaru have his way. And while pretty much everyone I see react to the series sees this as her being awesome. I think this makes her a shitty friend to both Emilia, and Subaru. She is ignoring Emilia's concerns and the promise that was made to her, and she isn't holding Subaru accountable for keeping his promises. She is enabling him to be a bad friend to Emilia. Emilia, on the other hand, rightfully calls Subaru out on his BS, points out the promises he's broken, and expresses her higher expectations for Subaru. And while this might seem harsh, I hope I'm not alone in thinking this is what I would want from a friend, let alone a partner. I will plant my flag and will die on this hill. Emilia>Rem.

KhioneB

wait, is this the first time you watch rezero?

Greg_

This is one of my favorite shows of all time and I've still never finished episode 13. I'm weak to cringe. I think the writing is fine, I'm just weak.

JD

W double episode btw, very agreeable. Also little small thing, in episode 12 when they showed Subaru falling off the carriage after stretching his arm out, it's because those lizards, ground dragons, are all blessed, basically have a passive ability, that negates shaking of the carriage, wind and so on etc. Subaru stretched outside of the "area of effect" so he almost fell off. Not very important but, seemed fun to point out.

We’re feasting, many think these episodes are cringe which yeah but it’s also peak character drama and writing -I think a lot of Emilias behaviour here is nformed by the interaction she had with puck at the end of memory snow but we also saw she already had a bad habit of keeping stuff from subaru even then probably also because of puck since he said something along the lines of you should try on your own first and only i your really cant do something on your own then ask for hep. Coud also simply be because she didnt want suabru to see her get mistreaded in front of everone -Funny you mentioned the bomb, bit too early in the reaction tho since that came an episode later -Not sure what studio did which episode but studio nexus did 10 whole episodes of this season so its possible thats where the differences in cg are coming from as white fox probably would take o the priority first few episodes in the capital -Guy/Al has the same VA as Leorio of the 2011 HxH -Also important the special treatment subar is thinking of is out of love while emilia thinks about special treatment in a bad waysince everyone treats her differently since she looks like the witch of envy -Its not about welth per se but about humans and demi humans, since emilia is half elf shes also a demi human and the kingdom has quite a conflicted history when it comes to that but ill explain more when it gets hintet at in a future episode -Its great to see subaru fully getting hiss as beat because in other anime hed just awaken his hidden demonic shadow powers and get a ht in or two bu nope. Complete failure and loss on his end, not so much of a Isekai fantasy anymore huh? -The rock bottom comment is funny, keep an eye open for whenever the new OP plays

smth positive_

yes thank you for that ryuuji

Greg_

The anime really didn't do Subaru's likability any favor by cutting out Julius page long classist rant about how Subaru (and Al) would always just be worthless peasants and never proper knights, because that's what they were born as, that was what set Subaru off to directly insult the knights in the first place.

Ryuuji Gremory

yes, i supoose. i want to say more but there will be people saying "wait thats spoilerrrrrrr REEEE" so im gonna save it for next week. I suppose.

Greg_

Peak voice acting incoming! I still can't believe the range on that man it's actually wild.

KingRat

my brain ....trembles .....DESU

Greg_

Can't wait to see all your thoughts on the upcoming episodes now that we're at what I'd consider the best part of season 1! Also finally getting to see some of the reasons why lots of people don't like Subaru, not me though I love that little cringy boy lol. I love characters that are very human and make mistakes.

KingRat

Happy rezero day Everyone! YESS, arc 3 Hype train, everyone On board!!!
