2021-11-05 18:49:36 +0000 UTC1) "Places In The Heart" (1984) - stars Sally Field, Danny Glover, and John Malkovitch. Set in a small Texan town during the mid-1930's during the heart of the Great Depression. Sally Field is a mother whose sheriff husband was accidentally killed & has to figure out not only how to take care of her family (and grieve), but how to pay the bank what is owed so she doesn't lose her house and kids. I don't want to spoil too much, but Danny Glover plays a black itinerant whose knowledge helps SF. John Malkovitch plays the banker's brother-in-law, blinded in The Great War, forced into being SF's boarder. It's a great example of storytelling with superb acting, showing what life was like (both the good & bad). How helpful and valuable acceptance and kindness can be, when you focus on what really matters & is valuable. The 'found family' is my favorite part, aside from the ending (an example of what should be and the most beautiful and bittersweet scene I've seen in a while). 2) "Captain Blood" (1935) - has Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Ross Alexander, Claude Raines, Basil Rathbone... the list goes on. The film that made Errol Flynn a star. Based on the Rafael Sabatini novel, it follows Dr. Peter Blood (Flynn) who gets arrested while tending to his friend. Who was injured in the famed 1619 Monmouth Rebellion against King James. He & others get 'rescued' from death by being sold into slavery. The film follows the efforts to break free & take care of themselves. Olivia de Havilland plays Arabella Bishop, the well-meaning but very spoiled daughter of Col. Bishop who is the plantation slave owner. A lot of the side characters steal the show, especially Ross Alexander as Jeremy Pitt. It's focus is white slavery, but there are a lot of black townsfolk (& one boy as the Governer's aide). I HIGHLY recommend this. It's a fantastic movie! 3) "Inherit the Wind" (1960) - Spencer Tracy, Frederick March, Gene Kelly. This is the film adaption of the famous play, which is in itself based on the real-life1920's case on teaching Darwin's Theory of Evolution in schools. Which made history. The film is again superbly acted, showing how religion & science are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The dangers of moralistic preaching (literally or through 'I'm so progressive/liberal, and you're so 'backward' in small towns"), as well the dangers of conflating attention with 'saving values' are deftly examined. How to recognize and value progress, without disregarding the value of old-fashioned beliefs or those of religion. One of my favorite films that really make you engage & think - timeless classic that can apply to life regardless of when or where you watch it. 4) "Any Day Now" (2012) - a hidden gem, one to make you root for the main characters, cry, and never forget it once you've seen it. Set in 1979 & based on a true story, it focuses on two interconnected lives. The film stars an amazing performance by Isaac Levin (the innocent heart) who is Marco, an autistic teen being raised by a single mother who (sadly) is drug-addicted. Their neighbor is the passionate Rudy (a heart-rending epic Alan Cumming) who is a gay man making a living as a drag queen entertainer. When the mom leaves the kid alone & doesn't return, Rudy turns to Paul (his new & closeted flame), a lawyer - who finds the mom's been arrested. They strike a deal where Rudy will take care of Marco while the mom's in jail. The film deals with them making a family, the homophobia (Rudy is Paul's 'cousin' b/c otherwise the adoption wouldn't be approved), the disability issues (how Marco is viewed due to the autism), and even a sympathetic few scenes on drug addiction (you may mean well, but...), job issues (jealousy & homophobia), and the impact of choices and actions. I'm actually going to include a link to the trailer for this one as it really pulls you in. "Any Day Now" (2012) Trailer Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ghwGOuuNy0 And Finally *drumroll* we have: 5) "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" (1984) --- the classic Miyazaki film that actually led to the creation of Studio Ghibli. And is one of the perfect films to watch, both in general and considering everything going on. It's set in a future where nuclear damage has turned most of the world toxic. Most of the humans live in small pockets set by this forest where the lingering ecological damage has it produce toxic deadly spores. It's inhabited by giant prehistoric insect creatures who are gentle unless you try to attack them & destroy their home. Their home is the toxic forest & wasteland, which is expanding and threatening the few humans left. Everyone wears masks to survive and Nausicaa is a kind princess and scientist who tries to help her people and loves to explore the world around her. Managing to defend those she cares about in non-violent ways, and having scientific exploration that's non-invasive or destructive. The only issue is those in power who have split into two warring kingdoms trying to get access to limited resources. Nuclear resources so they can try & destroy the toxic forest. That's all I'm saying - but it is epic, it is stunningly beautiful animation, it is a thoughtful and amazing story with incredible characters. And honestly, it's the perfect film to watch in 2021.

2021-11-03 05:21:02 +0000 UTCOh yes, Clue. Definitely Clue. That would be awesome. Keep in mind that it's best if they watch the version that includes all 3 endings. This movie doesn't have multiple endings in the same way as other movies, like a director's cut or something. It has multiple endings because its inspiration was the game of clue. So the different endings were like people taking their chance to say who did it. It is super funny, probably one of the funniest movies. It's crazy and zany. Has a great cast and is a real whodoneit at the same time. This really needs to be on the list.

2021-11-02 23:59:46 +0000 UTCI'll go along with the Lethal Weapon movies. They may be mindless action with lots of explosions, but they were the top of the action heap. Same goes for the Die Hards. Great action classic. Executive Decision is probably the best Steven Seagal movie ever made, other than every movie he isn't in at all. [SPOILER] He dies in the first ten minutes. I stood up and cheered.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:53:56 +0000 UTCYes, seconding The Equalizer if it hasn't already been done. A man who can calmly plan an attack to take out an entire room of attackers and carry it out in a matter of seconds. This one and the sequel. It's like John Wick, but he kicks ass better.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:47:45 +0000 UTCOh yes. Crazy Rich Asians please. That movie is so good and hilarious. The New York born and raised asian girl thinks she's going to meet her fiance's family. Little does she know that he is set to inherit one of Asia's largest fortunes. Can we say shell shock anyone? Great, fun movie.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:43:39 +0000 UTCTrue Lies is a fun one. One of Arnold Schwarzenegger's movies. Directed by James Cameron. Very funny and full of action. Really shouldn't miss it. Of course, the depiction of the terrorists is basically full fledged stereotypes, but it is an American gun toting show, so it's not surprising. IT's still a lot of fun. Arnold is a super secret agent living a normal everyday life with his normal everyday family, until everything falls apart.

2021-11-02 23:40:15 +0000 UTCSleepless is a classic, though I like You'e Got Mail more myself.

2021-11-02 23:28:32 +0000 UTCCatch Me If You Can is surprisingly good. Tom Hanks and whatshisface pretty boy. Great acting and humor. Especially for an inspired by true events movie. Of course Bourne Supremacy too.

2021-11-02 23:27:58 +0000 UTCOh ya. Paycheck. It's an absolutely crazy film. It's slightly futuristic. They guy lives in a world where you can have your memories erased. This guy does highly confidential jobs. So confidential that when he starts, they inject a marker that marks where his memories start for that job. At the end, they've erased all his memories back tot the marker. He takes on a huge job that takes means missing out on a big chunk of his life. After he has his memories erased, he finds himself being chanced by everyone either wanting to arrest him or kill him and all he has is a mysterious envelope with everyday items in it. Full of excitement and fast paced once the show gets going.

2021-11-02 23:25:05 +0000 UTCI'll second the Island. Sounds boring, the people in charge of titles really could have done a better job. I remember it being pretty good and it was well written.

2021-11-02 23:18:16 +0000 UTCWHAT!?! They haven't watched The LEGO Movie yet? That can't be right? Good god. Ya, that has to be on the list. Don't bother reading on until it is. Also, School of Rock does just that. Rocks. Jack Black at his best. One of his movies where they really let him go and let his signature humor take over. Imagine, Jack Black teaching kids. Yup, it's just that good.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:16:46 +0000 UTCOoooh, do they not have I Robot yet? That's a great film. Personally, I think Will Smith has been missing the mark lately, but I really liked that one. Good twists, lots of thought provoking looks at things, I really liked the logic in that one, great special effects. Really good show.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:14:18 +0000 UTCDefinitely Free Guy. I don't think an explanation is needed for that one. Such a great movie. Also, I'll back up Star Trek Beyond. I wasn't a fan of the second movie in that reboot series, but I liked that one.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:12:27 +0000 UTCLoved Big Hero 6. If they haven't watched it already, it should definitely be added to the list. Lots of feels type of animated movie.

2021-11-02 23:11:00 +0000 UTCOh ya, The Long Kiss Goodnight is a favorite of mine. A really great bad ass female lead for back in the day. Also, As Good As it Gets is a pretty good movie. Great actors, great writing, full of snarky humor.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:09:48 +0000 UTCBladerunner, the original was great. Pretty dark, but well written. It should definitely be on the list. Also, Children of Men is a really crazy and really good show. It's kind of of an interesting view on how the world would react if every person had stopped being able to conceive children for well over a decade. How politics, economies, and general life would run if everyone knew they were the last humans to live on Earth. Great movie and a great psychological thought experiment.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:07:11 +0000 UTCInnerspace. It's an old movie where a guy is shrunk down to a microscopic level and is injected into a person, unbeknownst to them. It's funny, has cheesy 80s special effects, and can be pretty fun. Also, if it's not already on your list, the movie FX. It's about a guy who makes special effects for movies. Not like the movies of today, but actual special effects for older movies. Some official types want him to use his skills to help them out with a case of theirs and things go haywire. He then uses all his talent to get himself out of trouble. It's pretty cool to see how the special effects are made and to see all the various uses they could be put to when getting you out of a deadly jam.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 23:03:33 +0000 UTCThey haven't watched the Goonies yet? They are humans from the planet Earth right? I'm pretty sure watching that movie is a requirement to live on this planet.
Jordan Haddow
2021-11-02 22:58:26 +0000 UTCOooh ya. War of the Worlds is a great rollercoaster ride of a movie. Once the action starts it just keeps on coming. Lots of fun. Also the Village was a great movie. M Night Shyamalan movie, so you know to expect twists. Unlike his weird one with all the spontaneous suicides, this one didn't disappoint. Another good one of his is Signs. If you haven't watched that one yet, it's another great one. It's really good if you watch it with someone sho screams at the jump scares.

2021-11-02 22:57:06 +0000 UTCHope it’s not too late to throw out some suggestions: GATTACA (1997): Low-key sci-fi story about a future society in which genetic perfection is the norm. The haunting score (reminiscent to the music in “ARRIVAL”) is the perfect complement to the noir-ish atmosphere. At the risk of sounding like a used-car salesman, I can virtually guarantee that the ladies would enjoy this movie. EX MACHINA (2014): Another minimalist, thought-provoking sci-fi movie, though certainly more abrasive than Gattaca. I’ve mentioned before that it’s a real kick to watch the opening of THE LAST JEDI before going into Ex Machina – since both “Poe Dameron” and “General Hux” are present here, but way different. 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (2016): This is a standalone story from the 2008 “found footage” movie titled just “Cloverfield.” It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead who was in Scott Pilgrim. I kind of like how it takes the trope of the “woman held hostage” scenario and spins it off into different directions. There’s a ballsy element to the plot turns that some didn’t care for, but I admired.

2021-11-02 03:57:08 +0000 UTCI don't know if you've seen this movie before. I'm on my phone and checking is insane and I can't get the app to search for some reason. Anyways, UHF is a movie from the 80s and is starring Weird Al Yankovic. Yes, the song parody guy did a movie. It's hilarious. He's a dreamer who can't keep a job who suddenly had full control over a TV broadcasting station. Yes, whackiness ensues. Remember though, it is from the 80s, so that carries over the usual insensitivities of that time. Going back further, I'm not sure how willing you are to go back to the 60s and 70s for movies. Audiences have a hard time remembering they were different times. Still, in case you willing to view older movies, there is the original Pink Panther movies. The best ones, I think, are: Shot in the Dark Return of the Pink Panther Pink Panther Strikes Again Revenge of the Pink Panther There are more, but they aren't nearly as good. I nearly died laughing when I watched them as a kid. Also, there is It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. This one is from the 60s and is about a whole bunch of random strangers driving down a road at the same time. A guy goes off the road and everyone stops to help out. Before the guy dies, he tells everyone of this fabulous fortune hidden all the way across the country. Everyone scrambles to beat the rest to the money. Things get seriously crazy and then just keep on getting crazier until you pretty much dying from laughing too much. Both these have reboots, which are okay. Certainly they don't carry the insensitive views of the older times, hut I also think they just aren't as funny. Around all the old timey thinking is some of the craziest humor you may see. I don't know, maybe get a friend or family member to screen it and see.
