Karate Kid | FULL AKIMA Reactions

Ok, Karate Kid one is in the books. 2 and 3 are enjoyable too. But if you loved this movie then it's definitely time for Rocky!!! The Greatest underdog story ever!!!

I hope that comment towards the end of the reaction about the Underdog Poll wasn't a fixed inflexible thing. That it's mainly for movies that are on the main poll "a lot but don't win?" That makes it sound like it's going to be what my biggest worry was about the Underdog Poll. That rather than really being a poll of Underdog suggestions, it was just going to be a lateral move of turning Top 5 radio into Top 10. What would be the point of that? Imagine only knowing or listening to the Top 10 songs on the US Billboard 200 every week. There would still be the same problem of before, just now the runner-ups would get a bigger guarantee of winning...

The main thing I remember from this movie is that it has the absolute WORST onscreen kiss I have ever seen.

I'm glad you liked this movie. One thing that stands out about the first Karate Kid - not just compared to a lot of other teen movies in the 80's, but most movies today as well - is how earnest and authentic and "true" the acting felt. Yes, the plot dealt with archetypes and tropes (teen bullies, the karate master, the big competition at the end). But within that framework, everything is presented with restraint and naturalism, and the courage to have quiet moments. That's one thing that the Cobra Kai series lacks. Don't get me wrong, it's undeniably well done. But it does not approach its material in the same earnest way. It basically takes the original characters, but makes them digestible for modern audiences who prefer stories be presented with a post-ironic wink.

It actually was Johnny that gave Daniel the trophy at the end. This is one of my favorite movies. There's so many moments in this movie that make me smile and tear up. I was lucky enough to meet Ralph Macchio at a con a few years ago. He was super nice and gave my nephew a free signed photo. I can't wait for yall to watch part two.

I gotta get this movie on DVD soon to coincide with the reaction. But I really cannot wait for the Akima's reactions to DIE HARD, it's gonna be a fun ride to watch. The definitive Christmas movie for Action Junkies like me. "Welcome to the Party, Pal!" ;D

Trivia Fact (if interested): This is the 1984 original, there is a "remake" in 2010 also called Karate Kid, when in reality it should actually be called THE KUNG-FU KID, since it centers on Kung-Fu (Kung-Fu is Chinese and more defensive whilst Karate is Japanese and more offensive, two different martial arts forms). The 2010 film stars Jackie Chan as the mentor and Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son) as the student. If there were two main reasons to watch the 2010 film, it is because of Jackie Chan proving he can do serious drama too, and the late James Horner's wonderful musical score. I'd honestly see the 2010 film as more of a stand-alone spin-off that homages the 1984 film.

I'll be honest, I actually think the situation between Ali & Danny was more miscommunication than anything; I completely understand where Danny was coming from. The fact that Ali wasn't being honest with Danny, played a huge role in His behavior. Danny definitely should've been more patient, but Ali had to understand too, the people She hung around with were so relentless against Danny, you can't really blame Him.
