Diamondback's hatred for Luke goes deeper than Luke having a better life. He mentions being sent to prison and things falling apart. A few episodes ago he mentioned that Luke abandoned him during that time and Luke actually apologized to him a few episodes for not being there for him. What he is doing is still not right but it is deeper than just Luke being the favorite child. Remember they mention being best friends at one time.
