Alice looked at the door of the room for a while, just staring with a cautious expression. There were no sounds. The room was proof of this, ensuring privacy, both for those inside and out. What she heard were the sounds of movements beyond the hallway, and also the breathing and voices coming from other places in the building. The three teenagers were the only ones left, the only ones, out of more than 20 vampires, both young and old. Silas, you fool.
Alice sighed and shook her head. Stupidity, pure and simple. Couldn't he have waited, could he? Was she so reckless?
Creating vampires, causing chaos and death without caution or a more certain plan. And he was still going crazy. It wasn't a secret what happened to vampires after something as terrible as what happened. She couldn't blame him for seeking justice, but acting impulsively could cost much more than his life, and it did. Only the lives of the other three young vampires were spared. I arrived in time. But she couldn't and wouldn't help the others, no matter how much she thought about it. My kind, and yet a bunch of fools. Carlos convinced her to help the younger ones, the students, but only them. Alice wasn't willing to sacrifice or risk her vampires for Silas' crazy followers.
But the teenagers...
They can be useful. Both the boy and the girl, Diego and Cassie, had strong personalities, which helped improve their skills. Both their strength and agility and speed could be useful. Just like you.
Someone capable of acquiring gifts. Smart, Silas. Very smart. If only he were more sane, perhaps Alice would have opposed the idea of not helping him in the endeavor against the hunters. But he wasn't. With his mind affected, and his emotions at their limit, he was far beyond rational. Sometimes she saw a semblance of calmness, but it was just a moment before returning to the same thing.
"Kill them, we need to kill them, we need to avenge, bring justice. Kill them. Help me. Will you help me?" She shouldn't have locked him up after that. He was injured, angry, and desperate, but Alice just wanted to try to get him to stay in the mansion. Just enough for her to try to find a solution. Not to lose him, but it was too late.
He found the solution, or at least what he thought it would be. He left, found out about you.
You.
Alice also thought about it, about you. That you could indeed help, that maybe you could bring more clarity and a certain degree of companionship to Silas, just enough for him not to feel empty and calm down, instead of trying to start a sudden and reckless war.
Alice heard the door being opened, and Carlos came out, closing it behind him. With a sigh, he stood in front of Alice. "So?" she asked, arms crossed.
"They... need time to adjust," Carlos replied, looking at her. The caution in his voice did not go unnoticed by her. "Silas didn't teach them to restrain themselves, not well enough to live with humans for long periods of time."
"I'll make sure there's a cover. To keep them away until they learn, and to mislead the hunters and city newspapers." She saw Carlos nod, seeming more relieved with her words. He shouldn't. I'm not doing this for him, nor for them. "I imagine you'll work on that." Alice continued. "Teach them to restrain themselves."
Carlos swallowed hard, and when Alice noticed the look he gave her, she couldn't help but shake her head. "No. I won't accept them into my coven."
"Alice -"
"Too young, and hungry. If they do something foolish after what happened, it will fall on me." She says. "But still..." "I will offer them to stay under my protection, and they will have to pay for such protection with obedience. But nothing more than that."
"Thank you." Carlos smiles, and Alice snorts.
"Don't thank me." Alice retorts. "Kindness would be to kill them." Carlos opens his mouth but she interrupts. "They will be hunted, whether they want to or not, sooner or later, but they will. Their lives are over, Carlos. Things will never be the same for them, and that's not good for teenagers living in this city." She takes a step forward. "Let them follow the rules, and keep quiet about who created them. It's enough that I'm judged as an accomplice because of my connection to Silas, I won't be incriminated because of his pupils as well."
"Yes, I... I understand." Carlos responds, hesitantly lowering his head. "I'll explain everything to them properly and-"
"No."
Carlos blinks. "What? But-"
"They don't need to know everything." They could be as foolish as he is if they knew. Alice doesn't doubt the naivety and daring of the youngest. She has been more reckless before and knows well how the passion for ideals can corrupt judgment. And love. May she never experience it as he did. She wouldn't be wiser than him if she lost her mate. "They have just escaped death and Silas' clutches. They were created by him, trained carelessly but they were, by him. Their minds, as well as their emotions, must not be well. They need time, both to overcome what happened and to control themselves, but more than that, they need time for Silas' presence to no longer be in their minds and emotions."
"Alice, he was terrible to these people, why-"
"You know very well why." Alice scolds him, her tone sharp. "Even those created by vampires as foolish as Silas can end up developing a loyalty, even if distorted, and they are young. They may think his reasons are still valid and try to fulfill his plans, even though he is no longer around to guide them." She puts a hand on his shoulder, with enough force to make Carlos tense, and stares him straight in the eyes. "I don't know them, and I wouldn't be foolish enough to think they will be rational enough to stay quiet if they know the whole truth. So you, will only tell them what I tell you to tell them, am I clear?"
"Yes-" Carlos stammered, nodding slightly trembling. "I... I understand. For their own good."
"For their own good." Alice narrows her eyes, pushing Carlos away with a brief shove, and the younger vampire nodded again, awkwardly, as he walked to the hallway where the psychologist was.
She slowly glanced at the door again, where you were. Silas brought disorder and problems, but also you, who could be more than useful, both because of your abilities and your connections. The hunters can barely imagine.
Oh if Silas had waited.......
She hears the familiar sound of a car stopping next to the building, as well as she hears and smells it, and Carlos also notices, as he was already descending the stairs in seconds. She looks out the window again, cautiously so that the curtain would hide her from the eyes below. But it wasn't really necessary. The young Taylor's eyes, desperate and anguished, were completely on Carlos and the door below.
Very useful indeed.
