Survival was not planned as an end of series story; as it was being edited, JNT tried to get confirmation that there would be a series in 1990, but was kept in the dark (as Jonathan Powell was the final arbiter - and he hated Doctor Who). So the walk “into the sunset” monologue was written by Andrew Cartmel as a way of potentially capping of the series if no go ahead was forthcoming, leaving it open ended for any potential return. There was never any official cancellation (as the BBC didn’t want a repeat of the hiatus debacle of 1985), the program was left to be forgotten. Time and tides being what they are, it was 7 years before any new Doctor Who was produced - and any new series was predicated on how successful the TV Movie did in the USA. When that turned out to be a non starter, it was a further 8 years before the successful revival of 2005. And Rose starts where Survival left off - an inner city Council Estate and a plucky teenaged companion…

And i started watching along with you (having only seen bits previously) once these eps became easily available on the BBC in the UK. Its been a joy and I look forward to where things go next!
