Yeah, I heard the name, and said, “Zachariah? ...The dude from Ghostbusters II?” They have been making a habit of giving Sam a good thump over the head this season. One, it is a change from the strangulation, as you say. Two, he does get the better of Donatello, so that’s something. Though she didn’t comment on it here, I know Jess loves characterization with clothing. It is great shorthand. On Turner Classic Movies, Eddie Muller draws attention to how ties are a great way to establish character in noir especially. Say if a guy always tightens and straightens the tie, it’s a high strung character. If it’s looser, more boorish or slovenly. Even how they take the tie off in they either untie the tie or loosen it enough to keep it tied can say a lot. Here. Castiel does have his arc reflected via the coat. He took it off here, I said, “This is SERIOIUS.” Keith Szarabajka who plays Donatello is always good. Creepy when he goes off the deep end here. Has a shade or two of the Joker, which fits as he was in The Dark Knight as Harvey Bullock. (Yes, his character was not given Bullock’s name, but that’s essentially who he played.) True about being the second time when Mary meets someone who’s all grown up, and they were an infant when last she saw them. “And again, it’s like poetry, it’s sort of, they rhyme. Every stanza kind of rhymes with the last one.” as George Lucas once famously said. If your dying on the Sam is Jack’s dad hill, then I’ll endorse it as I die on the hill of Bobby being the boys’ dad. Same with the hill of Charlie became their sister. Speaking of which, always great to see Bobby. Oh, yes, Jim was excellent as Bobby, yet different. His scene with Mary. It’s like seeing my parents have a conversation. The energy is similar. Fantastic words in the last paragraph. Yeah, this alternate world is everything Sam fought against. Now seeing it, I don’t doubt that it weighs heavily on Sam. See how this goes in the episodes to come. Reminds me that we, far as I can tell, have not gotten to the one that Jess said that her mom told her that she’d adore. I take it we’ll be getting to that one before the month is out? On Christmas Eve, perhaps? Assuming, I have the correct surmise as to the episode in question. Should be fun either way.

Freaking Zachariah.... one angel I definitely did not need to see again lol. The way Jess reacts to Metatron every time he's on screen, is my reaction to Zachariah, no matter the vessel lol. I hated him when he screwed with Dean, I doubly hated him for screwing with Sam, but touching Jack? That is way too far over the line. Both Zach and Michael can go screw themselves for hurting that precious cosmic entity lol, and I love that we got to see Zachariah die a second time. Honestly, not enough, but very satisfying none the less. Also, glad to see we are continuing this season's trend of bashing Sammy over the head. Glad to see we are making the shift away from constantly strangling the poor man, to giving him brain trauma instead. Its nice to shake things up a bit lol. I love the fact that over the course of the show, Castiel's trench coat can be used to mark his character's actions and state of being (the same way, if you pay careful attention, the condition of the Impala is used to mark Dean's current state of being as well). When we meet Cas, his trench coat is light and clean and perfect, reflecting his full status as an Angel of the Lord. Over time though, as he rebels, and changes, and makes darker, morally grey or even wrong choices, it gets darker, becomes worn, and bloodied. And then he loses it completely whenever he either forgets who he is, or crosses a line. Literally taking the coat off here, Cas was making a conscious choice to do something completely against his identity, or what he believes to be alright. It's like he had to shed his own skin, in order to do what he believed was right. Just a very cool use of costuming to add complex subtext to the scene, and characterization of Cas. I'm really happy Mary and Jack are together. Fun fact, this is the second time she's met a grown version of someone she had last seen as an infant, and the first was Sammy. The Sam/Jack parallels continue to just blow my mind at how similar, how closely interconnected these two really are. Like father, like son (Sam is Jack's Dad #1, and I will die on that hill lol. Lucifer may be his biological sire, and Jack may have chose Cas, but Sam is his father.) And it is always, always a pleasure to see Bobby, even if it is Not-Bobby Bobby. I do appreciate Jim's acting here though. It's clearly Bobby Singer, but at the same time, it is distinctly NOT our Bobby. This is a Bobby who has lived an entirely different life. Jim does a great job of keeping the spirit of Bobby, while adjusting it just enough for us to sense the difference. It's a tough line to walk, but every single time its been done on this show, its knocked out of the park. Donatello's actor also is just fantastic here. The corruption he shows is creepy, and off putting and brilliantly acted. Lastly, I love the callback to Soulless Sam. He was a dick, and very clearly had to go, but I do miss that sassy, snarky, ruthless version sometimes lol. Jared nailed it. But also, I like the callback to his time in the Cage. With the heaviness that is being explored this season- Sam and Dean's depressions, their PTSD, their trauma, the weight of grief and loss and fear, Lucifer's return and chaos, the threat of Michael... I like that we get this mention of the consequences of dealing with archangels. The reminder of the price Sam paid last time to stop the war that Apocalypse World is in now. And I think it sheds light on why Sam is being hit so hard this season, mentally speaking. Apocalypse World is everything Sam fought to prevent. He sacrificed himself to 180 years of straight torture, at the hands of two archangels, to save the world. He single-handedly defeated two of the most powerful beings in the world... and for what? Lucifer is running around free, getting more and more powerful, and now another Michael is on the horizon? The pain Sam endured, his loss of soul, his insanity, the sheer suffering Sam went through... just to end up on the brink of the exact same war as before. No wonder the guy is feeling so lost, and down. And of course, the boys aren't exactly the poster boys for therapy, so they aren't talking about it, but the show is doing a great job of showing us, obviously and through subtext, the weight and toll this is taking, on Sam particularily
