Hear what you mean about not minding two back-to-back Donna episodes, and how you express that you would have preferred a less depressing hour for this one. Yeah, this one is tough. Made me want to give you a hug. Shame Jody wasn’t in this as she could have helped lift the spirits, but she had her hands full with the girls, per the description that Donna gave. I’m assuming, by the way, that we’ll be hearing “Jody’s got her hands full with the girls.” various times for the remainder of the season, given Kim’s schedule at the time of the latter half of the season was more focused on being one HATEFUL woman on a different show. This is in the running for quickest you’ve gotten into the proceedings of the episode. Makes sense considering Donna’s niece was in the mix. And made more horrifying that the threat was not supernatural in nature. Mostly. Share liking when the show does that. I’m aware of how you say the more mundane horrors unsettle you more than the fantastical ones. Leads to Sam saying it’s not exactly there forte. And Dean calls him out on that and asks what’s up with Sam. Dean does raise the fair point of turning down pancakes is indeed a bit of cause for concern. Sam does deflect with the not unreasonable points like being on FBI radar again. Nice how Sam concedes he wants to be there for Donna. Nice to have seen Doug again. Feel bad for how he sensed that he was left out of the loop. Preacher man was an unctuous slime; we shared reactions there. A cold shiver ran down the spine when Donna got mad. Made me say, “Preacher, let us explain just how BADLY you fucked up. You made Donna angry. Frankly, it is astonishing you lived through the experience.” We all clocked that creep though he is, he was innocent when it came to Donna’s niece. Like Sam pointing out how sloppy the damning piece of evidence would be. Through that, fairly easy to deduce the fed was the villain. Though we also got the vampire fuckwit who thought he was hot shit like Bela or Sir Christopher Lee. He wasn’t. No apologies for wanting violence done to him, as I was in favor of it. Rotten how he infected Doug, though great how Donna put him down, and good that they cured Doug. Love how rather easy it was to take out the other bad guys. Heart breaks for Doug and Donna both when Doug is not cut out for the hunter life. Love your reaction to that. You call out Sam for not being uplifting with his words to Donna, and Dean calls him out on that too. Think “tough” was a strong word, as I’m kind of with Sam in that he’s not wrong with what he said. Him being in the rather dark and low spot is disheartening to see. I like how you assess his words that in the twelve years since the series began, they have lost many people. Good people. One such example being Kaia that Sam is guilty for how she died. Charlie was a big one that still haunts both of the boys. And though he won’t talk about it, (per Winchester tradition,) you can tell that Sam’s current emotional state is still being influenced by the Eileen shaped hole in his heart. Contrast to Dean who upon learning that his and Sam’s mom is still out there, it gives him more hope than he’s had for a while. Again, your reputation for seeing both sides leads to very excellent analyses, Jess, and it is always much appreciated. Thanks for the reaction to this rather grim episode.
