Star Trek: TNG 4x25 Full Reaction!

Star Trek: TNG 4x25 Full Reaction!

Data might not be boyfriend material, but he is the perfect rebound! because he cannot be hurt 🤷‍♀️ - in my headcanon this information made the rounds throughout the ship and Data had a whole string of short term relationships, healing hearts and getting them ready to get back to dating living, breathing entities 🤭

Paul Giamatti in Sideways was the first time I ever felt pure offended rage over the lack of an Oscar nomination, all the worse for coming directly after one of their best nights ever with Return of the King sweeping all eleven it got. Norrington is one of the most ill-treated movie characters ever, just because he's not the main hero. One more reason I like to pretend the sequels don't exist. There's some word that the episode was a deliberate jab at the Spock fangirls, showing what a relationship with him would really be like. Which just seems like a massive misunderstanding of both him and Data, the kind of thing a pre-development Dr. Pulaski would come up with. And I feel really bad for Patrick getting stuck with this script for his directing job. At least he got to make himself a big hero.

Shared thoughts of being curious about what Jess would say about this one. Ended up really loving her words and thoughts that she offered. Love how horrified she was over the one crewman’s death.

Begin by addressing your comment on the strategy of the one-week break, Next Gen-wise: I am neither confirming nor denying if you have a repeat occurrence of what happened with last season finale with this season’s finale, particularly as you’ll have your answer, presumably on Monday. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out. Now to the Data episode. Interesting one for Patrick to direct. Answering your one question right away, no, Jess, you’re not an asshole. Among other things, I am, and you’re never at the meetings. Yeah, I anticipated your reaction to this one would be in the ballpark of what it was. Nice opening with the musical performance. We share the love for this show having such appreciation for the arts. Love Keiko on the clarinet. My dad used to play that in his younger years. Wish I could still play, though playing the euphonium probably wouldn’t work in the performance as shown here. I do FEEL Jenna’s pain of feeling that she kept doing poorly during the performance. That happened to me one time, and that severely fucks with you. The main plot of this is Data’s attempt to have a romance. (Because apparently, Tasha is chopped liver, though that one episode was iffy.) As Ryan spoke of, this whole thing resonates with those of us on the autism spectrum, such as myself. And the whole thing, I can see exactly where you were coming from, Jess, fully acknowledge that. At the same time, you feel Brent’s performance in this whole thing. It does highlight where my autism, level, I guess is the word, is at. In that I’m not at the level of where Data is, and in terms of the visceral relation, Kingpin and Vanessa stand out, as Kingpin on his early dates with Vanessa is me if by some miracle I ever am on a date with a woman. I also refer you to the movie Sideways if the numbers allow the reaction to that, though it is looking probable it’ll happen somewhere down the line. In terms of Star Trek, I’m somewhere between Picard and Spock in this respect. Here, you observed correctly that Jenna went from one not great situation to another, and Data wasn’t suitable to give her what she was needing. As you’ve said, and I’ve concurred, the starship Enterprise is not exactly the best singles scene. You likened it to experiences in your own life, and I’m sorry to hear about one of your closest friends getting involved with a complete Charles Boyer douchebag fuckface, to use the technical term. It is good of Data to look to the crew for advice. Quick sidenote: Adore your joyous reaction to seeing Geordi with Spot. Geordi and Deanna were the most on the ball with what you were saying, and I liked your words there. Fantastic your reaction was to Worf saying to Data that Data is dedicated to his work and that he would expect such a man to show the same care and devotion in every aspect of his life, and Data very clearly got the message. See, you were nicer to Data going to Riker for advice, as I see Data talking to Riker, and I yelled, “NOT Riker!!” Do love how you also said you wouldn’t go to Riker for advice. The look on Picard’s face when asked, plus the response he had of putting the kibosh of Data seeking his advice is me in this situation. (Plus, he knows that given his lack of success, vis-à-vis his love for Beverly, him giving helpful advice isn’t going to be particularly efficacious. Likewise, good that Data did not talk with Beverly for the same reason.) Do love your words when Data goes back to the painting, how dropping hints with Data won’t work well. Similarly, how she hopes he’ll not have such Data answers to things. One of the big problems of life. It is as the saying goes, “Ask me an honest question and I’ll give you an honest answer. If you don’t want an honest answer, let me know and tell me what kind of answer you want.” The heart goes out to Data and Jenna both when Data tries to be that which he’s not. It just is not it. It’s like in Doc Martin when the title character makes the effort to try to act nicer, and it just creeps everyone out. And finally, Louisa says, “It’s no good acting nice, Martin, you’ve got to WANT to!” and Martin replies, “...WHY!?”, a statement I said at the exact same time when I first saw that episode. I also chimed in, “Data, you don’t have to drink if you don’t want to.” Data singing La bohème is somewhat relatable. The line about Jenna’s hair is a smooth line. Ultimately, the romance ends as of this episode. And to answer your one request: All right, rest assured, you won’t see her around anymore, throwing those looks at Data, guarantee that one. Love how you do have the hope that Data would find love. (We had that, her name was Tasha.) And as you say, the man has the company of his cat, he could invite Geordi over for dinner. Have that help to fill the gaping hole in a man’s heart, and... oh, fuck it. Talking briefly about the subplot. I’ve heard the subplot is not terribly well-received, so you have shared company with the response to that. Does lead to Picard having the impressive moment. O’Brien too. Loved your words over Riker’s concern for Picard. Now if this was the original series... Love that comment you made and your remark of Kirk always being in some shit. Gets a huge laugh from your screams over the fucking terrifying death. Tis spooky season, as you say, Jess, yes? And it is something after, as you said, we did not pick a spooky movie for you to watch for spooky season. You sure about that? Regardless, a lovely reaction, Jess, thank you.

I was interested to see what you would think of this episode, Jess. Relationship episodes on TNG are hit and miss but one with Data is quite an intriguing idea given his own personal quest to become more human. Intimate relationships with coworkers can be a risky business in the real world but I guess they have little choice on a starship. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the episode overall. The death of that crewmember is quite shocking and almost feels out of place in a relationship focused episode. It often gets rated as one of the most brutal Star Trek deaths on YouTube.
