Wednesday 2x03 Full Reaction!

Wednesday 2x03 Full Reaction!

Not seen Peacemaker, so that one’s over my head. Saw who plays the character and that looks amazing. Still working on feelings of Agnes beyond sharing the sentiment that Jess had of she’s creeping a bit, which Wednesday is taking advantage of. Heard that Emma made it known that Agnes is about thirteen, so the fans should probably ease up on the shipping. Good to know. Hadn’t thought of Capri just being Sixth Sense or something, though glad for you that that speculation is done. True about how Billie does look more or less the same as she did twenty years ago. More and more that we learn about Ncuti’s abrupt departure from Who, I’m with you on wondering why Davies hasn’t been more upfront about it. I get having to be tight-lipped about it leading up to the season finale, afterward, just be upfront about it. See we both made note of Anthony as Jim in Edward Scissorhands; talk about one of the more hateful villains in Burton’s filmography. Fair on wishing there wasn’t the cartoony sexist line. Knew you and probably everyone who recognized him would go for the more overt Breakfast Club jokes, hence why I tried to highlight some of his other stuff. Good note with the flare gun. Saying that Enid’s love triangle was tearing us apart was not on the bingo card, but ok. Does she understand life, though? They nipped it in the bud, whilst still leaving us with Bruno, who it was inevitable somewhere we’d get an Encanto joke. Supposing the swordfight is only the nod to Zorro, I ain’t complaining at all on that one. Does look like both ladies largely performed the fight themselves, and as I said, Catherine’s still GOT IT!! I felt there were some clear scenes last season of Wednesday does need to learn to listen to other people sometimes, just, as you say, they did stack the deck a bit too much in her favor at spots. Nice that there’s stronger writing about it this season. I do remember questioning was Laurel dead as we never saw her after the big finale. Nice that she is back as it means more Christina. Of course, we both allude to her famous smile, which remains some of the best pieces of acting in anything. Her and Thandiwe as scene partners does sound promising. Certainly a better scene partner for Thandiwe than Tom Cruise, which, to be fair, most anyone is a better scene partner than Tom Cruise.

Reservoir Dogs was the first time I learned Steve Buscemi's name, thanks to those opening credits. Until then he'd just been in that lump of "kind of familiar character actor I've seen around but have no idea what to call him."

By this point Agent Fleury is watching the show and yelling for someone to just shoot the damn parrot already. The new inclusion of Agnes could have easily gone sideways and out of character, but it perfectly works that Wednesday still has nothing contempt for her at the moment, but as long as there's someone around who's perfectly willing to be an unpaid intern and has such a useful power, she might as well take advantage. And we're already seeing several different ways she adds to the storytelling possibilities, combined with that great performance. It was a bit of a relief to see Capri talk to Enid, since her previous appearances were so oddly placed that I was starting to wonder if she was just in Wednesday's head. It's a hoot seeing former teen pop star Billie do these folk covers, and I also have to say, she's two years older than me and it's very upsetting that she still looks exactly the same as in 2005. And to go a bit off topic, while she's naturally being very tight-lipped about her new Doctor Who role, she did let slip that RTD contacted her about it EXTREMELY last minute, so there's one more piece of evidence that Ncuti sprang his leaving on the crew and they had to rush a new ending. It's honestly kind of bizarre that RTD would rather everyone think he's such a terrible writer than just admit that's what happened. Burton again goes deep into his past associates and pulls out Anthony Michael Hall. Certainly fitting for an episode that starts with making up for forgetting a birthday. And he brings all the exact same energy he did to Edward Scissorhands, knowing exactly why he's here and leaning fully into it. Though I do wish they didn't put it the line that makes him a cartoon sexist, which comes off like the crew were worried we'd think he didn't deserve to get Slurped. Maybe this guy could have gotten the help he needed if bringing a flare gun to school had been taken more seriously in the '80s. Or he could have just made sure he had his Roy Rogers pistol with him. This whole subplot was also kind of weird to me since this was at the same time as Season 3 of Foundation, a show where the word zephyr means something very different (speaking of, that finale was released today, which means Alien: Earth is officially the best thing on TV right now). Just like last season, the love triangle is easily the part I cared about the least, but it's already over so that's a big plus. And I was getting incredibly tired of Enid waffling over just telling Ajax the truth, which honestly was coming off as out of character and just making her look bad. No one wants to be Lisa from The Room, not even Lisa from The Room. It also doesn't help that the chemistry with Bruno is just as much like watching a wood block and a pile of dirt as everything involving Wednesday and Xavier. Maybe that's why people don't like to talk about him. Catherine Zeta Jones in a sword duel...and against a blood relative? This better be about something beyond a callback to Zorro, or I am in very serious and weird trouble. Her and Jenna very much pull it off, though (and from what I can tell it really is them doing a lot of it). Another real low point for me as Season 1 went on is how much the deck was stacked in Wednesday's favor, where she was always right and everyone else was just a stick in the mud who needed to learn to get on board with her. But now the writing has the confidence to show she does need to learn to listen to other people sometimes; after all, how likely is it that at some time in the future there will be the exact situation of some kind of undead Enid yelling her death is Wednesday's fault as they stand over her own grave? I'm guessing the intention last season was that Thornhill had been killed, but when the fans made such a big deal over the visual ambiguity, they realized they could use that and it seems Christina was still perfectly willing, and just like Tyler it's a blast to see her get to just be openly evil now, with that look like she's decided to scalp you and burn your village to the ground. Plus the promise of her and Thandiwe working together, which you just know is going to work well. She's got to be a better scene partner than Tom Cruise, at least.

Your apologies for the quality of the reaction: none are necessary as this was a good reaction, Jess. You do good work, even when sick. I’m sick, it looks nasty. I do hear you on the hot lights not helping. Speaking from experience with stagework, I imagine the makeup doesn’t help at times either. Hope you got plenty of water and rest in. Fun episode. We do have the nice opening of sweetness that is Morticia and Gomez making it up to Thing after forgetting his birthday, knew you’d have the “Aww” response to that. You say that you love Morticia and Gomez, we all do, Jess. Wednesday fails to recover the book. You got to get up pretty early in the morning to fool Morticia. Setting aside your predilection for taking both sides, it does feel like you kind of are meant to be on both sides. I lean towards Morticia’s side as she strikes me as someone who doesn’t say no unless she has a damn good reason. Morticia also raises the valid point of visions possibly being misleading. The question: Are these the shadows of things that will be or are they the shadows of things that may be only? Men’s actions determine certain ends if they persist in them. But if their actions change, the ends change too. Say it is so with what they show me with Enid. And I encourage Wednesday when she bemoans having to solve the case the old-fashioned way, as I said, “It’ll be good for you Wednesday. Give you a feeling of accomplishment.” Your own words were very well spoken, and I appreciated hearing what you had to say about that. But to be clear we need to KEEP Enid SAFE, GODDAMN IT!!! Nice to have an update on the plotline with Bianca’s mom, love your words about that. Bulk of this is the camping trip complete with Dort being just ecstatic that he finally gets to be Mr. Purple instead of Mr. Pink. Figured Enid would speak to both of us with the packing for the camping trip. Options, as you say. I took the whole scene in, and said, “I AM SEEN!!” Likewise, it spoke to me with Enid mentioned failing with her overpacking addiction, the affliction plagues me as well, so I FEEL Enid’s plight. And speaking of fashion: Catherine is a vision of loveliness in any outfit, though yes, the look Morticia had for the camping trip was FIRE. Funny enough Gomez asking about finding the smell of fresh air positively nauseating, and I don’t blink and said, “Yes, actually. It’s also quite painful.” Hilarious as all hell seeing Anthony Michael Hall as Kruger. (Or was it that other camp counselor sergeant man?) Quite the toxic asshole, which I suppose is the inevitable result of his high school friendship with Jake Ryan. Leads to the battle. Credit where credit is due, the scouts did hold their own well, dumb fuck though the one kid with the egg was for wasting the time prematurely celebrating. Adore your praise for Eugene coming in clutch, as always, with the bees and the Wagner, and of course, as she says, the teargas does nothing to Wednesday as to her, it smells like... Victory! Shame that Kruger took it poorly. Knew you’d comment on Kruger making the “female” crack, which made me note, “And there’s the Edward Scissorhands character peeking through.” Love how you found him to be too much with the fuming at how Wednesday showed him up, proving that he is not some God warrior, leader of men, he is Rusty Griswold, and he’s a c-plus student. Slurp surely had a nice Slurpee out of Kruger’s brains, puny though they probably were, and you had a most delightful reaction to said slurping. Fun moment of Capri leading the singing of Bad Moon Rising. ...No. Not touching that one as it’s too insultingly and disgustingly easy. I did love you dancing to the song. And it is lovely to hear Catherine singing. An enjoyable reaction you had to the Damien Omen II raven who yes, does pop up everywhere. Oh, we both had the “No Ma’am!!” response to Agnes and her habit of dropping eaves. She’s creeping a bit. The worship of Wednesday is a touch overblown with her fangirls. Of course, my two favorite characters are Emperor Palpatine and Hannibal Lecter, so I really have zero legs to stand on. You do give slight praise when Agnes says the insult that the lack of calories deterred Slurp, which, I mean, clearly that does not seem to make much of a difference given the state of the walking Johnson that is Kruger. ...Well, never walking anymore, anyway. Then there’s the big swordfight where for such a smart gal, Wednesday was quite stupid with her challenge, though I get, she’s desperate as she loves Enid and is scared to lose her. All the same, I yelled, “You’re challenging Elena de la Vega to a swordfight, and you think that’s going to work out well for you!? Calibrate your ambition!!” Hell of a swordfight, complete with Catherine rocking the shit in those scenes. Goddamn, does she still GOT IT!! Let out a “YES!!” when Morticia won the duel. We both get the kick out of Gomez having the relatively calm response to seeing Slurp. The Ajax parts yielded the strong reactions from you. You were kinder to Ajax than I. We both endorse the need for the conversation, where I got irked was the way Ajax was pushy about it. And it is good that he got shit off his chest, even with me yelling at him, “Dude, she moved on! She’s with a guy that’s not you! It’s humiliating and disheartening, I know! But it’s the lady’s decision, and you need to accept that! So, STOP WHINING, and just TAKE IT LIKE A MAN!!” Makes me feel like kind of a shitheel when the scouts even expressed their sympathies for Ajax. Nice to hear your own words on the matter. Quite the ominous moment when Wednesday sees... someone... at the camp. And she knows time is running short; perhaps answers will be at Willow Hill. And the ending scene reveals that our dear Wednesday is at Willow Hill. And her smile is still as terrifying and blood curdling as it was thirty-two years ago. So adore your reaction to seeing our dear Christina again. All in all, a most fun reaction, even with you being slightly under the weather, which did nothing to damper the reaction. Thank you for the fun reaction, and again, hope you got plenty of water and rest in. Take care, Jess.
