Rendering 101 - pt. 24: Building Non Photorealistic Shaders In Redshift

Usually I’m not massively into Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR), but Dan McPharlin’s style got me inspired to try and build a shader that imitates this particular style. Stylistically it’s between McPharlin, Planète sauvage and Roger Dean

I love that you created for this style of render. Do you think there would be a way to create engraving style etchings with hatch marks in place for the stippling you did here? I absolutely love these videos Mo, I'm constantly dumbfounded by what you are able to do in this software.

This was really great Mo. This type of grain shading is really in at the moment and to see it possible in RS is pretty neat. Often I've had to use a combination of passes from mantra and RS to create this outline/npr shading effect which is pretty cumbersome. I'm envious of what is capable in the Arnold NPR arsenal. Arnold seems to have this magical 'Curvature filter' which seems to do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Hey Joerg, thanks for the question! That was half an afternoon, as far as I remember. The only "detour" that happened was when I decided to add shadowing via point attributes. As far as mantra shading goes - I'd have to see this to be able to provide at least half-decent advice :) Cheers, Mo

So my question is how long did it take you to figure it out and how many detours and dead ends did you discover on the way? ;) Also.. I tried to replicate the network in Mantra but got stuck on the noise pattern. Only the cellular noise comes close, but does not offer a bias input. I guess I need to replace that with some blend/mix/fit magic?

This was great! One of my favorite ones to watch, gave me lots of great inspiration

I think there are a few topics left to cover: Physically based shading, passes and getting rid of noise... What would you like to have covered? Cheers, Mo

Hi, I was wondering how long the Redshift tutorials will continue?

CRISPR_CAS9

Yess, I'm a long time fan of this type of retro sci-fi style! Great tutorial, thank you. One thing that I do miss (switching from Vray) is the easy toon line shader (with options to hide inner lines etc). Would that be difficult to create in Redshift? EDIT: Nevermind, this tutorial includes the toonish outlines.. Cheers!
