Rendering 101 - pt. 20: Color Space Basics & Intro to ACES

If it isn't obvious, color spaces and color systems are a topic most dreaded by Mo. Nevertheless in this video he goes over how color spaces are defined, how and why we define color systems in a horseshoe diagram and the basics of using ACES in Houdini and Redshift.

At work, we're using "Utility - Linear - sRGB" and "Utility - sRGB - Texture" to transform our diffuse and HDRI maps to ACEScg. For Normal/Displacement maps, we use "Utility - Raw" to preserve RGB values of these maps as-is within ACEScg. Normal/Displacement maps just tell the render engine "how much" to tilt/push data -- they don't affect the perceived color of the materials and lights.

Really interested to try the conversion to ACES for my photogrammetry models and textures. I am thinking I process my raw DJI/CR2 images and save in srgb color space, process through reality capture (supposedly does not modify color space on export of textures), and then perform the conversion as described in Houdini? Or is it more nuanced than that? I ask here because there's a thread on the ACES forum regarding photogrammetry and there arent any definitive answers...

Hi, thank you for this rendering series, and now the Unreal videos released this week! On the VFX platform website at https://vfxplatform.com/ it is mentioned, that ACES version 1.1 is the target version for 2019 and 2020, so it's probably safe to use it instead of 1.0.3 - but I did not do any tests about stability, yet. Is is mentioned here at ACES Central https://community.acescentral.com/t/aces-1-1-now-available/1420 that there are no major changes, mostly bug fixes etc. On the Redshift Trello Development Board, they are already working on this RS Texture Node OCIO import feature...

Heyhey, you can use a ROP File Output Node in your COPnet to save your images to disk and use them however/wherever you like :) Cheers, Mo

Hi Mo, so after i convert the image in cop can i save it to my disk then import it as just texture from disk or i have always read from the cop file, if you understand what i mean. Thank you

Hi Mo, wonderfully compressed! Thanks a lot. Forgot ticking off "Linearize Non-Linear Images" today and a quick look in this tut just saved my day. Thanks a lot and: Moe Coffee Ticker: +1 Cheers, Hannes.

Hannes Gerl

nice, thanks for the quick rundown. not sure i feel like installing opencolorIO on linux though. hahaha.

Thanks so much for elaborating - very interesting! Cheers, Mo

Hi Mo, The Aces workflow was originally adopted as part of a project. Two of us were working on a series of shots for a natural history program and I wanted be sure we could integrate with existing pipelines. As it happened there was no need to have ACES for that project but there is something about the colour and highlight representations in the render view that makes it pleasing to use and (once you know what you are doing) After effects integration is pretty simple. Moving forward and as I develop more VFX assets for TV/broadcast it makes sense to me to keep things in the ACES workflow as the assets will be ready to integrate other ACES pipelines/shot footage etc. At least that’t the thinking. Interested to hear your view on this. For motion GFX this is less the case of course, I do experiment with ACES but I am not sure how far I will go to adapt assets across the board, probably not but only time will tell. Paul

Hi Paul, that's interesting, would you mind sharing your experience with ACES in a small studio environment? Would love to hear more! Cheers, Mo

Nice one Mo. I have been using ACES in my small studio for a couple of years, because of the better colour/highlights. I didn't know you could plugin so directly with the environment variable or wire COPS to redshift, that's why I watch these videos, always a little nugget of joy. ACE.

hi thanks alot plz if u can make tutoriaal about tracking between after effect and houdini and put aniamation character in scene and solve problem for matshadow in mantra and render man a and redshift matshadow for character in real vedio thanks alot

Great explanation! Would be cool to see a deeper dive into setting up a full physically correct material. I believe you have to do different color transforms on different material channels, such as utility-linear-texture for Normal maps and Displacement maps, etc. I hope in a few years we don't have to think about this stuff anymore, and that ACES is just the norm, as it does give you way more room to play in terms of color.
