Rendering 101 pt. 10: Basic Setup - RenderMan

Based on our initial Mantra setup we adapt our scene to be rendered in RenderMan.

Rendering 101 pt. 10: Basic Setup - RenderMan

Comments

Would you recommend Renderman or Mantra for very large, complex scenes (lots of VDBs, 100 mil polys, RBD destruction)? Thanks.

Adam

No need to say sorry at all, thank you for your insight. Being relatively new to 3D rendering (I have dabbled in some After Effects and Blender before Houdini) I have never heard of that angle - about the CPU rendering being more stable. Then I'll not write off Renderman just yet and maybe they even release XPU for Renderman soon, or Karma is being getting more useful in the not so distant future. Or importing to Blender, to render in Eevee. Thank you and cheers. :)

Haha, #seifenboss is a good one indeed! Generally when it comes to huuuuge scenes, in my experience CPU based engines are more stable. And indeed everybody needs to find out what works best for them. That being said, I've been using octane for styleframes and redshift for production and am somewhat happy about that combo. But I sometimes long back for the ruggedness of a CPU engine... My advice is to invest a bit of time and test as much as you can, trying out different engines. Sorry if that feels like an obvious answer... :) Cheers, Mo

Thanks for your quick response. I think I wasted your time, finding the answer to my question, while responding to your message - because: Quixel doesn't support Renderman (yet). If you feel like reading the rest.. I thank you. I tried out the non-commercial license. The thing is, this is my first time using 3rd-party renderer. And of course it's fast compared to Mantra, but I think every 3rd-party render engine is fast compared to Mantra. According to this person, Renderman seems reasonably fast, compared to the competition as well. They tried to make a fair test comparing render time with a machine ridiculously better than mine. It's not very recent, so things might have changed. https://www.sidefx.com/forum/topic/65959/ REDSHIFT 2.6 RENDER TIME:average of 3 min per frame ARNOLD 5.2 20 min V-RAY NEXT 8.5 min HOUDINI 17.0 MANTRA 60 min RENDERMAN 22 9 min OCTANE 4 3min Renderman's documentation for Houdini is not very in-depth, unless I oversaw it on their website. So I might look elsewhere for a cheap monthly subscription option - maybe Octane. So here I am, looking for an easy answer for a complex and nuanced topic, everybody has different opinions on. I want to make a video with a large scale terrain, scattering a lot of vegetation (using Quixel) in a valley viewed from above. rocky desert, buildings hard-surface etc. Cheers Be safe, or as my local awareness campaign would say #seifenboss - making the Corona prevention efforts way cooler and more successful.

Hi Kilian, it's hard to say if a certain tool makes sense for you or not - I think that massively depends on more factors than purely hardware. That being said, I'm not exactly sure how Renderman is gonna perform on your computer. But - rejoice - there's a non-commercial license for renderman which allows you to try it out for free. Which is what I'd always recommend before chosing a ceratin tool. So just give it a try to see if you like it or if it doesn't make sense for you. I'd say :) Cheers, Mo

My CPU is quite bad, my GPU quite good. Renderman XPU has not been implemented, yet. Am I correct concluding, that it doesn't make sense to use Renderman for me? (video rendering purposes, I am making a 4min. music video at the moment) Will share if I'm not terribly embarassed by the result. AMD Ryzen 7 1800 X,AM 4, 3,6 GHz RTX 2070S 8GB RAM 32GB
