Volumes 101: Volume Basics

Welcome to Entagma's premium course on volumes. From the foundations to the intricacies of working with volumes in OpenCL - we've got you covered. This course will take you on a path to dicover Houdini's amazingly powerful volume toolset. This is unheard of in any other 3D software - Volumes allow you to model geometry, store complex particle movement or to plainly model nice clouds. Follow Mo as he walks you through the deep waters of Volumes, Voxels and Houdini.

I am using Apple M1 Macbook Pro. Will Open CL works?

Raghavendra Holla

Slooowly starting to crack these concepts...! The 2D explanations are really key for me. For some reason I find it many times more difficult to wrap my head around volumes. It's just one more dimension, but still I find it very confusing. Thanks for your high quality videos!

Heyhey, as always - lotsa ways to do this, here is one option using a bit of VEX to align a bunch of scattered planes on a surface to point towards your camera. After that just transfer the original mesh's normals onto those planes to get that SDF visualizer effect: http://www.entagma.com/downloads/fake_SDF_Viz_01.hip Cheers, Mo

silly question, but i love the aesthetic of the isosurface visualization, but it renders as volumetric particles... how can I retain that weird pixelated glitched-out look in the render, or is that just asking too much? :D

I just wanted to mention here that I had the exact same problem that Eric had and no matter how many times I tried to add that ramp parameter, I could not get my fog back. The ramp was flat in the geo context and I did play around with the ramp in that context and it was incredibly slow and I could not get my fog to come back. Today, the very next day, I am not having the slowness and I am able to get my fog back by playing with the sliders. I am posting this here in case anybody else runs into this. It should work as stated here in the tut and mine did eventually work with the same file. The only thing that kept changing was adding and removing the ramp parameter. I am running 18.0.460 on Windows 10 Pro.

Hi Eric, I just rebuilt this setup in H18.0.287 Apprentice and it's working as expected. Make sure you dial in the ramp on the Volumevop, not inside of it. Cheers, Mo

First off I'm using houdini 18 Apprentice with a fairly modern computer. (i7-7700, 32gb ram, gtx1070). At about 7:30 when you add the ramp parameter. If I do that it works OK. But as soon as I change it from RGB Color ramp to Spline Ramp (Float), the fog goes away. My computer also become very slow and the houdini UI becomes very unresponsive. If I change the values of the spline ramp like you do, it doesn't do anything but it's also very unresponsive. If I change it back to RGB Color Ramp it doesn't bring the fog back. I have to delete the node and redo it. I've tried several times with the same result. Is this a bug? Or a change in things since 16?

Eric

Hi Mattia, did you make sure you pointed the "Density Field" parameter to the name of your Density volume? Cheers, Mo

Entagma

Hi there. I'm having problem with volume, houdini doesn't update visualization, IE using volume visualization op i don't get any variation in viewport, is there any specific thing to know?? i'm using houdini 17.5.173

Mattia Diomedi

Heyhey, to get the outlines as well as a correctly displaying volume, use the volume visualization SOP and make sure the volume name is correctly set in the "Density Field" parameter. Just checked in H17.5.360. :) Cheers, Mo

I'm having the same problem Is there a solution

Rashed Abdullah

Hi there ! I'm getting into a problem I don't know how to solve. I don’t see any outlines on the volume node and for some reasons that I don't get, the volume visualization node does not work for me ! When I crank up the density scale I just get an empty volume without any display. But the node is still detecting voxels in it. Did they change something for it, with the new versions of Houdini or am I missing something ? (I'm on v17.5) Thanks for your help and answer ! :) Cheers. Alex.

Alexandre NGUYEN

Hi Simon, that is due to volumes initially being not activated. Just when you set the voxels to some value != 0 will they be displayed. You could also try activating it by using VDBActivate. Cheers, Mo

this might be a stupid question, but I was wondering why in my houdini I do not see a wireframe around my volume, eventhough my shading is set to shaded + wireframe. I can only see a wireframe when I set the initial value to atleast 1.

Simon van den Broek

Thank You very much, Moritz!

I am so sad why I didnot get in here earlier.....BUT never too late!!! I like the organize videos that make me learn in a system, and I also like the editing of the tutorial video would not make me fall asleep, it is very efficiency!!!

Thanx for your comment. This makes us happy ☺

I honestly didn't know what to expect when I signed up for "courses", but this is way beyond my expectations. I'm already starting to understand Houdini better on a deep, technical level. Never would have touched VEX or VOPS without your videos.

Draisey Digital

Hm, that's weird - try this one and let me know if that worked. (pwd: volumemagic) https://www.dropbox.com/s/76lq60qwfpizsyo/010_Scalar_visualization_03.zip?dl=1

Thanks for these! Following along but for some reason Noise Type is not exposed as a promoted parameter on the Volume VOP. Houdini 16.0.721 linux. is there a .hip file?
