Yes, shotguns are typically a close range firearm. Good choice for home defense or apocalypses situations. Buckshot rounds for wide dispersal pattern (about the size of a dinner plate at 50 feet), aim not quite as critical or you can go with a slug for a singe projectile with a bit more range. People are always messing around with custom or improvised ammunition for them as they are fairly forgiving. If you want to see what I mean, check out the Youtube channel TAOFLEDERMAUS.
