Only Synclaire is similar to Phoebe, but Phoebe is not that naive and Lisa Kudrow based her on her own sister(confirmed by Jon Levitz). The other characters literally started as tv tropes that have existed for a long time and the photoshoot is something that always happens as you can see within a 4 year range many movies/shows using the exact same photoshoot idea to promote. Also Living Single is obviously a type of Golden Girls with younger characters and different race, that's how the show feels and not at all how Friends feels

Synclaire became Pheobe (the free-spirited artist who always made random comments). Kyle and Overton's traits were split between Joey (the player who is also dimwitted but sweet), Chandler (the successful fiance guy), and Ross (the romantic). Khadijah and Max combined became Monica (ambitious, motherly, anal retentive, unresolved trauma with her mom, and always being the host of every gathering/hang out). There's even a poker episode where the girls fight to be included. Plus they are connected in similar ways. Synclaire and Khadijah are cousins. Khadijah and Regine are childhood friends. Max used to live the girls like how Pheobe used to be Monica's roommate. One of the neighbors ends up with one the girls (Overton and Synclaire; Chandler and Monica). I have love for both shows but even Queen Latifah told the story of how Living Single inspired the creation of Friends. They even had similar photoshoots for the promo.

2025-02-23 16:33:16 +0000 UTCI don't get how people compare them, the only similarity is that they are a group of 20 something people dealing with life and work...the ideas aren't far fetch to call them copies, and I see how Friends did so many episodes better...while Living Single is not something you rush to watch as even most episodes feels short or rushed

Queen Latifah said the President of NBC at the time was asked if he could have any new show at the time what would it be and he said Living Single. Friends debuted a year later.
