SHOLAY Watchalong!

Jaby and Achara finally watch this classic movie!

Comments

With the number of views you got on YT I hope it means you'll watch more classics! These are the most famous ones that I think would get a lot of views: ANAND (1971) with Rajesh Khanna as lead, the superstar of the time, and Big B as co lead. It's the role that made him popular. It's a drama about a man who only has a few weeks left to live (Big B plays his doctor). Very renowned movie even internationally. The filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee was one of the biggest directors in Bollywood. MUGHAL E AZAM (1960) a period romance based on a legend about Prince Salim (Akbar's son, they are real historical figures) falling in love with a courtesan. You HAVE to watch the colorized version. The sets and costumes are stunning. The courtesan is played by Madhubala who was nicknamed in the west as the Indian Marilyn Monroe. She sadly died of heart issues at age 36. She was the biggest actress of the 60s. The prince is played by Dilip Kumar who was one the most renowned actors in Bollywood. The Emperor is played by Prithviraj Kapoor, the Kapoor patriarch who left Punjab and got into movies. He was Rishi Kapoor's grandfather. GOL MAAL (1979) a great comedy with Amol Palekar whom Jaby saw recently in Farzi where he played Shahid Kapoor's grandfather. It's about a modern young man pretending to be conservative in order to please his boss but who gets caught in a web of lies. This comedy still works great today. Dina Pathak is in it too, she was the mom of Ratna Pathak Shah, the actress married to Naseeruddin Shah (you saw her as the mom in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and more) and of the also well known actress Supriya Pathak (the mom in Ram Leela, in Mimi and more). MOTHER INDIA (1957) an epic drama that was the 1st Indian movie nominated for an Oscar. Lead role by Nargis, a very renowned actress of the 50s-60s, who was Sanjay Dutt's mom. Lead male role in the 2nd half is played by Sunil Dutt, Sanjay's dad. He saved Nargis after there was a fire on set, got badly injured, she looked after him and fell in love. This was referenced in Om Shanti Om when SRK's character saved Deepika from a fire on set. AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY a super popular masala/comedy with Big B, Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna (big star of the time, father of Akshaye Khanna whom you know from Dil Chahta Hai among others) playing brothers. The director was nicknamed the "master of absurd". It's very out there in terms of plot elements but very very entertaining + with a message without ever being preachy. MAYABAZAR (1957) *the* most popular Telugu classic, with Savitri whose biopic Mahanati Jaby and Achara reviewed a few years back and which got a watchalong this year with Vivan and Michael. It's a fantasy romcom based on a folktale. Lots of fun creative vfx of the time + great sets and costumes (choose the colorized version). Jr NTR's grandfather (NTR) plyas the god Krishna and was so popular that he played the role again in a dozen movies afterwards. Other popular ones: MERA NAAM JOKER (1970) a must watch, party autobiographical drama by and with Raj Kapoor. I would really like to see a reaction to it. Kapoor was a very interesting, daring artist. This is so Rishi's first role as a teen actor. SEETA AUR GEETA (1972) one of my all time fav movies. By the director & writers of Sholay, with 3 of the Sholay actors (Hema Malini, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar). It's a comedy drama about twins separated at birth, one is street smart and kicks ass, the other shy and lives with her abusive aunt. The twins cross paths and chaos ensues... Malini is awesome in the double lead role, the male actors too, it's a super fun movie with great songs and chemistry between the actors. It was remade as ChaalBaaz in 1989 with Sridevi, Rajnikanth and Sunny Dheol, plus Anupam Kher as the abusive uncle. It's a fun version too but with more drama and serious action so I prefer the lighter tone of Seeta Aur Geeta. AWAARA (1951) a social drama by & with Raj Kapoor as well as his real life dad Prithviraj, and Nargis Dutt. A really really great movie both story wise and in its filmmaking. One of the most renowned Indian classics. GUIDE (1965) a drama following the life of a tour guide and the unexpected turns it took after he fell in love with a married dancer. With Dev Anand who along with Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and others mentioned earlier was one of the most renowned actors in Hindi movies. Guide was directed and written by his brother. PYAASA (1957) by and with Guru Dutt who was one of the most renowned artists of the time. A timeless drama about a writer struggling in a capitalist society, about the opposition artist vs producer/publisher. One of the few Indian classics with international recognition (like Anand and Mother India). More recent popular classics: PARINDA (1989) a crime drama with Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar playing a memorable villain. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra (he directed 12th Fail and many more + produced all the Rajkummar Hirani films such as 3 Idiots) RANGEELA (1995) an evergreen romcom with Aamir Khan & Jackie Shroff, directed by Ram Gopal Varma. One of my all time favs. ROJA (1992, Tamil), BOMBAY (1995, Tamil), DIL SE (1998, Hindi) the 3 dramas making up the "terrorism trilogy" by Mani Ratnam. Movies connected through themes only. Dil Se (with SRK) is one of my all time favs. DIL TO PAGAL HAI a very good romcom with SRK, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor, directed by Yash Chopra. Hoping to see a few watchalongs to some of these soon 🙏

I watched the movie on Einthusan and saw the original ending where Thakur kills Gabbar. Much better ending. Here are some fun facts for you, hopefully Jaby & Achara see this: The 2 couples are married in real life, still to this day, not just Big and Jaya but also Hema Malini (Basanti) and Dharmendra (Veeru), who did other movies together, my fav is Seeta Aur Geeta, it also features Sanjeev Kumar (Thakur) playing the 2nd love interest as Hema plays twins in it. Seeta Aur Geeta is by the director and writers of Sholay. It's a super fun movie that I hope you react to someday 😊 Amitabh and Jaya did various movies together too. You saw Jaya older in Kal Ho Naa Ho, K3G, and recently in Rocky Aur Rani (and Dharmendra played her husband). She is a great actress, you definitely need to see more movies of hers from back then. Sanjeev Kumar is one of the best Indian actors of all time, period. He died of heart problems in his 40s, very sad. You should see him in more movies. The actress dancing in the item number is Helen, Salman Khan's stepmom. Sholay was written by Salman's dad (Salim Khan) and Zoya & Farhan's dad (Javed Akhtar). There is a recent cool mini documentary series on Prime presenting their career. It's similar to The Romantics on Netflix which was about Yash Chopra. Sholay is indeed a "curry western". It's also a masala. A classic movie you could consider watching is Koshish (1975), by renowned filmmaker Gulzar, where Jaya and Sanjeev play a disabled couple. It is the remake of a Japanese movie. Or Mili (1972), by renowned filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee, where Amitabh plays a depressed lonely man falling in love with his sick neighbour played by Jaya. The breakthrough role of Amitabh is in Anand (1971) where he is the co lead. Before that he had many flops in a row. Anand is one of the biggest Hindi classics.

Jaby will enjoy the story of Mera Naam Joker more than Anand or Deewar (which are not better movies btw). Mera Naam Joker is also a must watch to get to know Raj Kapoor's work, both as a director and actor. The film is said to be partly autobiographical. It is also Rishi's first film. The film also features a tribute to RK's popularity in Russia through the 2nd story. And overall it's a daring movie that Jaby should see to counter some misconceptions he has about Indian classics. There are many reasons why Mera Naam Joker should get the priority.

FYI to ppl, the timestamp is 1 minute & 43 seconds ahead since they restart the video near the beginning.

Ietseatapples

You need to have your own copy of the film and sync it to the timestamp, which is the hard part

I think the timer is off since the film was restarted.

I don’t think you should do Mera Naam Joker!!! Like there are other better movies like Anand, Deewar, etc. from Amitabh Bachchan’s era.

FINALLY A CLASSIC!! Holy shit it took a while lol. Please consider doing Mera Naam Joker next, you will be introduced to Raj Kapoor (director & actor), who was the biggest artist in the late 50s, 60s, 70s, and you'll see Rishi Kapoor (his son) in his first role.
