Podcasting Day: Compu-Toon with Dennard Dayle 🌭

This week we’re joined by academic, acclaimed author, regular newsletter rememberer and fellow Hot Dog Dennard Dayle. We’re discussing a newspaper strip called Compu-Toon, by what is ostensibly a man named Charles Boyce. I say “ostensibly” because I can, I went to college for words, but also because there’s no way this exists.

Reality tells me this is a single panel comedy comic strip about technology, but I have issues with every one of those words in regards to Compu-Toon. Our universe has the balls to insist this strip has gone on for forty years, and has been published in 150 major newspapers. There’s no way. Nice try, the Matrix, but I’m pulling out the feeding tube now.

Not a single Compu-Toon can be explained. Each and every panel strips nude and fistfights logic to a standstill. So for this podcast, we’re playing a game: If we can even guess at what the fuck Compu-Toon is talking about, we get one point. If we actually think we get what the joke is supposed to be, we get five points. If we find that joke funny, we tender our resignation to the site and step onto the ice floe.

You can play along at home! Here are the 20 strips we’re discussing in order. Don’t jump ahead, or the Charles Boyce mind virus will rewrite your neural pathways to only speak Compu-Toon and you’ll die trying to eat a laptop.

My god, did you make it all the way to the end? Amazing! Now here’s what your scores mean:

Nothing.

It was never a game, it was only to keep you engaged while the Boyce virus transmitted. Charles us on delete, Boyce us on trend app!

Stunningly impenetrable.

Tad Williams

Plus, about half of the theories presented agree he is an ass-crushing-super-jock.

Showed-up-late-in-shredded-pants

The comic has been consistent for 30+ years. If anything this has displayed resilience against ravages of age.

High-Fiven Freeze-Frame

This guy is 74 years old, at some point this is elder abuse

Ray

It was interesting to listen to the guys' slide into insanity

Nick

As an aspiring comic strip artist I am adding Charles Boyce to my list of hero’s, along with Jim Davis and Scott Adams. Hail Satan!

High-Fiven Freeze-Frame

Ya'll gazed into Compu-Toon and Compu-Toon gazed back into you

Jimmy Rullo

Great podcast. Holy lord what a week from 1900HOTDOG. Just firing on all tubes (of meat).

Patrick Riordan

The facial expression on the guy talking is different and he's added some motion lines around the phone, but it's basically the same drawing, The one from today (July 6th) is another app store one, and I swear the kid? little person? has been copy-pasted and flipped 180 along the vertical axis. I think he's cut up his old comics and now just makes new ones by sticking old parts together in "new" ways, like a depressed child playing with a Mormon knockoff Lego set. edit to add: Holy shit, June 30th is the same picture as the July 5th and the "voice isn't trending" ones, only flipped so the guys are the other way round. I need to stop reading this comic.

Matt Edwards

Send them on the next golden disc with the message "Is this guy one of yours? Because these cartoons make no sense to us."

Matt Edwards

They're basilisks. They're trying to snowcrash us with funny.

dirtygremlin

I went to see today's comic when they did in the episode, and I swear to you my brother in Christ that it was literally the exact same art from the 'voice isn't trending enough' comic. Not a single line was changed, the exact same expressions, nothing was different and I was still somehow shocked.

Pistol Wizard

I read Panel 2 as "Two DICKS to the left and six DICKS to your right" and my dyslexia wrote a better joke than Charles Boyce

Kevin Lynch

Just an all-time great opener from Brockway. God the theme song dovetailing into Brockway pointing and laughing at the death of an entire form of media as the fires surround them is pure hotdog.

Patrick Riordan

Those comics make me angry for reasons i cannot understand. My country is fire for, well, French reasons, our planet is boiling us because of us, but no, it is those twenty shitty nonsense comic strips that raised my blood pressure. Thanks I hate it

Elgofo

I haven't listened, yet, but I can confidently say, after reading those 'cartoons': Fuuuuuccckkkk yoooooouuuuuu.

CHAUGGLE

It's true. I do sound like me.

Aaron Russell

I read two of the cartoons before I read what the episode was about. I assumed these were man-comiced, not-insane lame comics. Then I said oh, these are probably AI generated, let's laugh at the inane technology the smart-monkeys cobbled together. This has to be some sort of way to send secret messages for members of some group, right?

LaziestManOnMars

We definitely haven't been chanting and forming a group of Mociples.

LyraV

My eyes have always been everywhere! Don't worry about it!

Lord Mo

Is this related to that "time cube" guy? https://timecube.2enp.com/

MIchael Branch

That's what YOU sound like you stupid asshole.

Taylor Hensley

Mo infected this website so steadily over time it's like we've all just accepted him as the new normal.

Brendan McGinley

Those have got to be some kind of test to see if you are actually human, right? It is like the reverse of Captcha... if you get too many of these correct, you are clearly a robot.

Jeff Orasky

I think the Irma comic is talking about women not getting credit for work they do? I mean, that question mark has nothing to do with that idea, but does that track?

Nicholas Faubert

I read every sample comic posted and now I don't know how to smile.

petertron

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Vooster

Holy shit. This is Star Trek IV. These are messages sent to warn us about whale extinction.

Pee-Wee's Uncle

You sure aliens didn't make these?

Max Rockatansky

I know the effect one or two Boyce comics has on my brain (thanks Mo) this is sure to leave me in a weeks long quandary of seeking to understand that which is beyond understanding. At least Dennard can soothe my curiosity with insight.

LyraV

My mind went numb reading these comics, but my hand under some kind of autonomic compulsion kept scrolling down. Also, does the kid have a backward flat cap, or is his head dented?

Bill Culbertson

This is what we should've launched into space to try and communicate with aliens.

Pee-Wee's Uncle

There is no way this strip is real. Our universe is FUCKED.

Chris “Ace” Hendrix

I was just the other day thinking this... thing would be a good HOTDOG subject. I am becoming one with the HOTDOG.

Matt Edwards

*blue* Aaron's brain suffered a DDoS attack from Compu-Toon and was forced to flush the cache and reboot *screen*
