The audience knows, the contestants don't. That couple slowly escalates throughout the season, before hooking up in the semifinal episode. We see if anyone has enough soul left to intervene, or gets caught up in the momentum.

Brockway hates it but most of all he despises himself for being the sort of trash savant that could easily rattle off half a dozen sequels to MILF Manor. Together they're the perfect power trio to take on the absolute worst things humanity has ever broadcast.

Been a long time since I've read anything about it but apparently the neurological damage can lead to depression, mood swings, bad memory, etc which really play well with those knee jerk 'I said something shitty now I'm doubling down defending it rather than admitting you caught me on a bad day' mindsets.
