Podcasting Day: The Conan Saga, Part 1 with Lydia Bugg 🌭

On this day of high adventure, the Dogg Zzone 9000 welcomes our own Lydia Bugg to discuss 1982's Conan the Barbarian! Hers is a tale of discovery as it was the first time she'd seen it, as opposed to Seanbaby and Brockway who have been thinking about Conan the Barbarian several times a day for 39 years.

Listen here, or wherever there are fleet horses at your feet and falcons at your wrist! And for 🌭 champions or higher, the bonus podcast features Liddy running her first book game where Sean and Robert romance each other to the death. Let Crom witness us as we solve the Riddle of Steel and have a camel-punching good time doing it!

Remember to lash yourself to our wheel wherever you get podcasts, and Crom us on Crom! CROM!

There is a movie about the writer of Conan - The Whole Wide World… Vincent D’Onofrio plays Howard.

Robert Murdock

Also, not to brag, but I have a pretty good Mako impression. Picked it up watching Avatar repeatedly.

What is this fuckery?!!!? It seems obvious that I am, truly, the Laziest Man on Mars, and there is no denying this as Gahan of Gathol told me this himself! Do you really want to start an intergalactic war between Barsoom and 1900? That noted, we can talk about the Supreme alphabetical order thing after the wars conclude.

Dean Costello

I remember that, it was like the ultimate what-if future. I'd wish we lived in a world dual-ruled by Thor/Conan but I feel like I'd miss showers. Also definitely look up the panel of Conan in his dope ass purple pimp outfit. It was so slick.

LyraV

A favourite What If...? of mine is when Thor goes back to Conan's age and they team up to fight Thoth-Amon. It ends with the implication that Conan would go on to become a god himself, which is hilariously bad news for all the assholes of the world.

petertron

This is a fantastic idea.

1900HOTDOG

Laziestmanonmars is actually another Supreme's username, so you will have to fight him for that title. Who wants it less?!

1900HOTDOG

Hell yes, you do! You're welcome.

LyraV

Oh Krom yes please, I'm so in.

LyraV

Conan is one of my favorite movies so this was delightful

SingingH0b0

Why is it we have hundreds of competing streaming services and I can't watch Conan without borrowing the DVD from a library like it's 2003? I'll be back to listen to this properly once my discs come in.

Bonnybedlam

I was listening and literally seconds away from commenting that the song was by Kelly Clarkson when Lydia corrected herself. It's me, and it of the two people who like both that song and 1900 Hotdog

When I was a soldier in the late 90s, getting drunk in the barracks and watching Conan was something that we did at least once a week. We communicated to each other almost entirely in Conan quotes. And I'll tell you this: There is nothing more satisfying than looking a defiant, junior soldier in the eye and saying "I am the well-spring from which you flow." Also, "Krommunist" needs to be a t-shirt in the Poxco store like, yesterday.

Matthew Bielanski

Oh yes, my wife agrees that "Laziest Man on Mars" is fair, reasonable, and tracks pretty closely to reality.

Dean Costello

No one can deny that iIt does crush other podcasts, drives other podcasts before it, and hears the lamentations of the podcasts' women.

Dean Costello

The commentary on the DVD is definitely worth a listen. And I don't usually care for DVD commentary. This podcast is what is best in life.

Jeff Orasky

Godammit... Now I gotta spend a month making a 1-900-HOTDOG Conan poster in the classic Drew Struzan style. Thanks, assholes.

Will Black

Also, I've listened to more than one podcast about Conan, and........do alot of people not understand the purpose of the Wheel of Pain? It kinda seems like the movie didnt do a great job conveying to people that it's purposefully pointless to break the spirit of slaves, given how many people I've heard wonder what the fuck is up with the whole wheel thing.

Have a serious soft spot for the two 80s Conan films. Immensely quotable, has some hilarious\fucked up behind the scenes trivia (YMMV depending on whether or not you think its funny that the future Governor of California was mauled by dogs in a cheap action film.). Conan the Destroyer is slightly higher on my personal scale, but mostly because I REALLY like Grace Jones in that movie.

Flippant Sausage

Whenever my friends have babies, I tell the child the Riddle of Steel from the beginning. It sounds weird to do that, but I want them to be strong and confident.

Chris “Ace” Hendrix

I just want to point out something that is absolutely amazing about this film that I don't think it gets enough credit for and that's the fact that it actually has a perfect female hero that doesn't go out of it's way to make either everyone else around her completely incompetent, or at one point turns her into a damsel in distress for no reason. Not only does she hold her own against multiple opponents just as well as the men do but she fucking fights off demons with a knife, can only be killed via wizard magic from Darth Vader, but then she comes back from the dead to fucking keep kicking ass. Any Hollywood producer that can't seem to figure out female action characters should be forced to watch this movie on repeat until they figure it out.

Captain Steve

Oh boy! Can’t wait to hear Lydia’s thoughts about that witch lady who reeeeeeally gets into it!

Pem

The first movie I ever bought on DVD. The basis for all that is best in life: enemy crushing, driving said enemies before me, and all those sweet, sweet lamentations. You must learn the riddle of 🌭, Conan. You must learn it’s discipline. For no one in this world you can trust—not men, not Godeks, not clowns…🌭 you can trust.

Chris “Ace” Hendrix

"Do you want to live forever?" "Steel isn't strong boy, flesh is stronger!" "Conan cannot cry, so I shall cry for him" "Grant me one request, grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to hell with you!" I could quote this film all day.

Max Rockatansky

What an incredible convergence of two of my favorite things. The fact that this is only part one is sweet lamentations to my ears.
