Podcasting Day: The Satanic Panic, with Jason Pargin! ๐ŸŒญ

I would wish you all a Happy Podcasting Day, but Iโ€™m afraid thatโ€™s inappropriate today. This is a Very Special Episode of the Dogg Zzone 9000 where Jason Pargin helps us tackle a very serious problem: Satan.

Yes, it takes three to tackle Satan - one for each leg and one up high - but more specifically, weโ€™re talking about the Satanic Panic. It was a hilarious and ridiculous nationwide witch hunt that spanned all of the 1980s, and the inherent comedy of panicky idiots seeing the devil in nerd games was only slightly dampened by the many, many real lives it ruined.

Luckily Seanbaby brought the craziest god damn book to lighten the mood: Satanic Ritual Abuse: A Therapistโ€™s Handbook.

Itโ€™s a manual for gullible therapists on how to coach attention-seeking adults into bad improv about the devil, and itโ€™s full of illustrations youโ€™d only pretend to put on the fridge even if you loved your lobster-clawed blind child very much.

Our fine Patrons get the bonus episode, where Jason sticks around to watch Aquaman do very little in a confusing tale of Super Friends! And donโ€™t forget to buy Jasonโ€™s incredible new book, Zoey Punches the Future in the Dick, wherever incredible new books or dick punches are sold. Please also subscribe to our podcast wherever podcasts or dick punches are subscribed to, and leave a review! Be sure to mention that it DEFINITELY DOESNโ€™T sound like weโ€™re all a bunch of fuckinโ€™ dweebs who the devil would never hang with. Clarify that it DOES NOT sound like that.

WE LOVE YOU, SNAP-SNAP, BUT THESE ARE OVEN DRAWINGS.

Been going through it and listening to your podcast has been really great. Thanks to Mr Pargin he is truly a modern day Socrates and I do not say that lightly. Thanks to the Dogg Zzone (9000)

I can't imagine what it's like not being forced to grow up religious. I had to go to my step-grandma's church for years in case there was an inheritance. But grandpa died first and she remarried, leaving me with nothing but decades of free-floating general anxiety and vague sense of doom that vanished almost immediately upon accepting that Christianity was bullshit. My parents were good people, but that was definitely abusive (especially the part where the church told me my parents were going to hell). I don't even hold them completely responsible, They were as much victims as I was of our society's insistence on pretending any of that nonsense is real.

Bonnybedlam

Deep down, I always knew.

Don't forget to thank Satan! S-sorry about your kid though. We have trouble with earnestness here.

To be fair, I'm about 5 years younger than Jason/Sean and did not grow up religious. This was always just a joke to me - I had none of that personal connection.

The Satanic Panic is just an incredibly fascinating topic that's both deeply sad and darkly hilarious. Robert Evans did a pair of episodes about it that are also well worth checking out.

A watchlist for cool dudes, yeah.

This panic is endlessly fascinating and itโ€™s repetition through the ages is weird as fuck. Side note: my 5 year old was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes last night. The only thing that cheered me up was a Jason Pargin guest episode. So, in the most Miami Connection way possible. Thanks buddies

Good Satan and his hot witches

Brockway's comic relief saved this episode, Sean and Jason seemed continually on the verge of drowning in the combined awfulness and ludicrousness of this book. Real talk though: I have a close friend who had DID (what they used to call multiple personality), and rest assured it does happen, and it's often a way of coping with hideous abuse. But the shitty thing about this Satanic Panic is that it's NOT NECESSARY. Dee Brown is actually CORRECT when she talks about people with that diagnosis coming out of a house of terrible abuse, chaos and danger, combined with having to cover it up and be "perfect" in public. All that is true. You do NOT have to add an additional layer of robes and goat-head genitals, a conspiracy involving the entire population of a city and piles and piles of dead babies! It is not necessary to explain the obvious, i.e. why someone's personality would fragment under the pressure of awful abuse + secrecy/gaslighting!

Daphne Lawless

I know a lady who claims to have been a victim of her parents' satanist cult as a kid. Her stories combine dramatic The Omen style rituals with like Passion of the Christ physical torture. You've probably already guessed she doesn't have any noticeable scars from the 13 years of scourging and burning. That would almost seem suspicious if I wasn't 100% certain this was a totally real thing that happens.

Simon Girthy

โ€œIn the background a freshly killed baby is providing blood for the ceremony.โ€ Where?? Is the baby Waldo? I can never find it.

Stephanie Reinheimer

Idk I think some of these drawings would make great tattoos

I panicked about Satan once. Then I realised heโ€™s just misunderstood. And who amongst us hasnโ€™t had a massive falling out with our father, tempted two naked people in a garden, been denounced by the church and society at large and inspired acts of ritual nudity and reckless abandon? Literally none of us, not one. Youโ€™re one of us, Satan. An honorary hotdogger. Iโ€™m on another watchlist, arenโ€™t I?
