Also, things were very different back then, so it was common for women to not be taken seriously, especially by men. So, probably why the doctor kind of ignored Claire. Everything was about the man of the house. A man could even commit his wife to a mental asylum if he wanted to, and the doctor would tell the husband about what she was talking about with her therapist.

2022-12-28 05:42:48 +0000 UTCI know that you are further along than this episode, but I didn't see you play the intro song for this episode, it's possible that it didn't show for some reason. But please watch at least one intro song per season, they are different each season.

2022-07-23 19:37:51 +0000 UTCJamie escapes death at Culloden... Brianna comes into the world - Frank's intentions and Clare's patience are tested... And, 1948 patriarchal misogyny in America shows its ugly self... ya, this one has all the feels. The best part though... the two separate stories on either side of the 200 hundred years begin their two decade paths forward toward - F&W - and the unimaginable adventures that follow. This was yet another sensitive and highly intuitive reaction that enhances the experience! Thanks!

2022-07-19 02:38:30 +0000 UTCI'm sure it's not unusual for a dad to be the first one to hold the child especially in a situation like this where the mom is put under and is completely unconscious and it makes sense! it's just in this instance it bothered me because from the moment they got to the hospital it was "Mr. Randall's baby" like Claire didn't matter and was just the thing holding in the baby so it was very upsetting to see that after saying no to the drugs she misses out on the very first moments of her baby's life! It just added a layer to the treatment she received from the doctor and felt so deliberate to me!! I'm happy for Frank though cause he deserves to hold the baby too it's just everything together was so... grrrrrr😠

2022-07-19 02:30:10 +0000 UTCOh my god what an awful thing! I heard a lot of good things about doulas, I think it's beautiful and must feel so rewarding as a profession. Women all around the world deserve to be cared for and make decisions about their births or just their bodies in general, it's common sense in my book. I hated that scene with the doctor and I just know Claire will be the most amazing surgeon!

2022-07-18 23:38:50 +0000 UTCOkay… off work and commenting as I watch. First, just let me say that I HATE seeing them apart!! I saw another reactor before I found you who had a drinking game every time the Prince said “Mark me” lol The lighting during Jamie and Randall’s fight was a happy accident. The sun was setting when they were shooting that sequence and when Randall reached out to Jamie and it looks like he said Claire just before they both fell was improvised in the moment by Tobias (Randall) Caitriona has said in interviews that she thought that scene of her walking to Jamie on the battlefield would be quick and then she’d be able to go, but she did that walk a lot and it took a long time and it was cold. She doesn’t have those expectations anymore no matter how short a scene is. Ughh… she introduced herself as Claire RANDALL… You can see how pissed she was and how much she was trying to hold her tongue when Frank’s boss was being condescending. Luckily, Frank isn’t like that. Rupert wasn’t here in the book because he was killed at the time he lost his eye. She was thinking of Jamie when she saw the bird singing out the window. Frank was offended when Claire wanted to become a US citizen saying that she’s turning her back on England, but I think she just didn’t want anything to do with England after all that happened. The British were the reason she was separated from Jamie. The look on Jamie’s face when Rupert was shot.. 🥺 Haha… she’s glad she didn’t hit Frank with the ashtray. She did tell Jamie at Lallybroch that she had good aim to throw crockery. I love that you know what episode “Faith” was. 😊 You brought up a point that never even occurred to me about not giving the baby to Claire first. You are absolutely right about the way the doctor treated her, but I never thought anything of it when I saw Frank holding her because I figured since Claire was still unconscious, Frank could hold her until she woke up, but they could’ve kept her in the crib until she woke up. Sam and Caitriona were sad going into S3 because it meant that a majority of the Scottish cast were now dead and they would be missed, but both of them have said really great things about the other’s work. Sam was impressed with the scenes between Claire and Frank (I almost typed Jamie out of habit) and Caitriona loved Sam’s scenes on the battlefield and in the abandoned house as he was dying. Looking forward to next Monday and the Monday after that…

2022-07-18 23:33:38 +0000 UTCI feel sorry for Frank, but imagine Claire, getting used again to detached Frank face from Randal. But he is so opposite to everything that Randal was. And on top of that there is Jamie, her soul mate, he can't compete with that. But I give Claire so much credit to try very hard to rebuilt a life as family with Frank, that is a good man and we saw that was a good dad to her daughter. Let's see how things will progress.

2022-07-18 22:35:10 +0000 UTCYep, women used to be put under and they pulled the baby out with forceps, very often resulting in the woman having a lot of issues/damage with her bladder or other issues with that area of her body later. It was horrible!!!! We still aren't where we need to be in the US with childbirth (I wrote a paper on childbirth in college) in that we do way too many c-sections and we don't support women in labor much here. Unless you hire a doula/labor helper person, you are unlikely to have the support you need to birth without meds, even if you want to. I wanted to have my son without meds unless an emergency necessitated it, not just because -- but because I researched and knew the risks to him and to me were lower without meds. And even then I had to fight for the birth I wanted. Birth in the US is still messed up, but not as horrible as it used to be.

2022-07-18 21:28:44 +0000 UTCMore to come !!! Getting exciting! ;) I relate a lot to what you say, mostly about feminism: in this episode...the dude was so annoying saying women should not read or get interested in politics etc, plus the forking doctor not even asking her the questions.... In a certain way, it's almost as if we can see the machism even more on the early 50's than in 1746...Crazy. At least, women got credit for taking care of everything including raising kids and work their parts. ;)
