I agree completely with your assessment of what Dean meant when he said he was "especially" happy without Sam. I think he was just trying to say that for the first time in a VERY long time he wasn't burdened with the worry that comes from feeling so completely responsible for someone else's life. I'm not saying that Sam isn't responsible for his own life, or that he can't take care of himself. I just mean that for, literally Dean's entire life since he was 4 years old, he's been told to take care of Sammy, to keep him safe no matter what, to protect him. He's been made to believe as a child and then again just before John died, that if something happens to Sam, he's failed and that he's responsible for everything that both happens to Sam and that Sam does in the world. So to be happy without that weight of responsibility is understandable I think, and doesn't mean he doesn't still love his brother/son more than anything in the world.
