Adding to what they said above. The symbol is used a lot in New Orleans including the symbol for the New Orleans saints. I don’t know if we pronounce it correctly but we pronounce it as floor-duh-lee. Do not too much different what u said it was in French. Also they word u was tryn to pronounce is prounouce as if you were to say the word air but It’s spelled as “heir”

2021-12-04 16:01:42 +0000 UTCJust to add, many Louisianans are called Cajuns, and "Cajun" was just a really bad 1800's American pronunciation of Acadian. A little history here: The people who would become the Cajuns came primarily from the rural areas of western France. In the early 1600's, they began settling in Acadie, now Nova Scotia, Canada. I believe it was after the British took over that area in Canada many Acadians migrated to Louisiana due to it's French roots. Every time a French-Acadian would say they were Acadian with their thick French accents, it sounded to the locals like they were saying "Cajun" and the name has stuck to this day.
