Both Jensen and z Jared were employed at the time by The WB (Jensen was doing Smallville while Jared was doing Gilmore Girl). The executive producers wanted them to be Sam and Dean, so they invited them for the final phase of auditions and there were just the two of them for that. But when the auditions just started, Jensen was actually reading for Sam and they were ready to offer him that role before Jared showed up. So they called Jensen and asked him if he wanted to be Dean and he actually felt he liked the character better so we was happy to come back and read for Dean. That's when they brought Jared in and had them perform in front of the whole network and that's where they met.
