The Vampire Diaries 2x12 - "The Descent" FULL REACTION
Added 2021-05-22 13:01:02 +0000 UTCOkay... the moment has come, my first breakdown.
I can't say it enough, the last scene with Rose was beautiful and it was a wonderful way to send her off. Extremely sad and she hasn't even been around that long.. I think just like Damon, I didn't realize how much I liked her until she was gone, she was an extremely loyal friend to Trevor and she was about to be a great friend to Damon also.. so unfortunate that she had to die and it clearly set off something deep inside Damon! Great episode ♡

2021-05-23 18:59:51 +0000 UTCHere goes the lyrics for the song that plays at the end with Damon during his existential crisis . Song name is DLZ by TV on the Radio. Let me know if interesting in that Spike and Buffy video. https://genius.com/Tv-on-the-radio-dlz-lyrics

2021-05-23 16:57:09 +0000 UTCAye, when it comes to Spike, he is my favorite character in Buffy. Personally, I can only watch season 2 of Buffy due to Spike, and then Season 3 is a tough season for me to watch due to Spike's absence. Anyway, it was due to a Spike and Buffy video actually, that made me start to look more closely at how scenes are shot and the symbolism we are seeing taking place in the show with scenes or even objects that are taking place in TVD and sequences even of scenes that are very subtle, but are done very purposefully. We once again see that Damon also has a very deep and beautiful heart in all of this, he just doesn't let people see it.

2021-05-23 16:49:44 +0000 UTCI really love when the symbolisms are brought up! it adds so much to the already beautiful scene that was the dream sequence, it was nice to see Damon feel so comfortable with Rose and the way he felt for her! Ahhhh Damon... he truly is one of a kind and I just want to know every single thing that happened in his life hahaha

2021-05-23 16:17:27 +0000 UTCYeah Damon always makes me think of Spike and I love it! Spike being my all time favorite vampire I can honestly say that Damon is a close second and probably only because of the sentimental value that I have for Buffy but they are really similar in their struggles and that's what makes them interesting and makes them more appealing to us as viewers because they seem more real! What you wrote about the symbolism of Damon's room is so true, I didn't give it much thought but we can clearly see a contrast between Stefan and Damon's room! that last scene with Rose was absolutely beautiful

2021-05-23 16:13:06 +0000 UTCPatpet did an excellent job in describing Damon, so I won't go into that as much. What I will say is that since you are a big fan of Buffy, the similarities between Damon and Spike is there for comparisons in terms of complexity. Damon is even more complex I feel than Spike overall. Yet we see a similar struggle taking place as well. What I will go into is more about symbolism we see taking place in this episode concerning the characters. We finally get to see Damon's bedroom for the first time, every time it's been Stefan's room. Now what do we see in the symbolism of Damon's room? It's open, clean, and freeing, there is nothing hidden in the room, or no place to hide. This is a sign and symbol of vulnerability, while also being open and honest about who Damon is as person as well as truthful, he doesn't try to hide from himself or who or what he is as a person. Sure, he does have his secrets as we see at the end, which only heightens his own vulnerability that we see reflected in his room of it being open and freeing. This then of course also plays well with the Dream sequence, one of the most beautiful and heartbreaking scenes in the show, of it being in open fields and the freedom we see taking place with Rose, and we see Damon's vulnerability play out here as well. Now we see Elena reacting to the room as she looks around and then tries to play it off as it only being a room. Yet, later we Elena run to Stefan's room as she is being attacked by Rose and you can contrast Stefan's room with Damon's room. Stefan's room is packed, cluttered, and it's easy to hide things and protect things while in this room and Elena's also seeks this room as the room for safety and protection while she is being attacked and chased by Rose. Another point of symbolism we see is that out of all the colors that Rose's dress could be in the dream sequence, it's blue, and is a similar blue to that of the shirt we see Elena wearing through out this episode. There is significant meaning behind the color blue as well in terms of what it represents. Blue symbolizes: security, trust, loyalty, responsibility Effects of blue: protects, calms, relaxes, supports Positive traits: confidence, peace, honesty, reliability Negative traits: conservative, passive, sad, predictable The final moment of course is we see a moment shared between Damon and Elena at the end, Elena realizing Damon's vulnerability and comforting him after the two have their exchange, and perhaps even Elena needing a moment as well with everything taking place in her own willingness to give up as that was part of the exchange. As far as Jules goes, yeah, no body likes her at all that I have ever found. There are other matters you bring up I will just have to bite my tongue on and whistle about currently. It was great to see you so excited about the Forwood moment and kiss. What you say about Matt and Caroline at this point, is also what I think many feel as well in this moment in the show.

2021-05-22 22:53:55 +0000 UTCThat's really true, Rose made Damon think about his life and I think he admired her because she wasn't afraid to say out loud that she deeply missed being human and that she regrets being so scared and afraid during all those years. and like you said, he also realized how in love he was with Elena! he's feeling conflicted about what he wants to be and what Elena also wants him to be and his nature and killer instincts. Something kind of goofy but that came to my mind is the title of the show monster by mistake lol, Damon never wanted this life and now he suffers from what he's been turned into. I'm not saying he hasn't been enjoying it by moments but in the end he will always feel some type of way and miss his human days, cause Damon seemed like he was a decent young man despite his history with his dad and everything which I of course want to learn more about!!! Overall, I agree with you so much! and I can't imagine Damon being as interesting and touching as he is if he didn't have that much depth!

2021-05-22 22:51:50 +0000 UTCI agree with you. The situation between Caroline, Matt and Tyler is getting complicated. As well, at this point, I didn't see her and Matt going anywhere. How do you go about telling someone that you are a vampire? When your mom is the sheriff, is in the coucil and she is a vampire hunter, you want to stay as low key as possible, and you don't want to make waves. And Matt knowing would opens the door for a lot of question (like how Vicky died) nobody wants to open. It's not only about her. At list Tyler and Caroline have the same situation with Tyker mom, they both have a lot to loose by letting the truth coming out. But now Jules is around wispering to Tyler hears lies about Caroline and twisting the truth about Mason in a way that is going to make Tyler questioning everything. And apparently more werewolves are heading to Mystic Falls, looking for trouble.

2021-05-22 17:21:52 +0000 UTCI quote myself on this because I said it better here: "Damon, poor thing, can catch a break. Every time he has an opportunity to feel good, to have someone in his life that cares even a little, distracting him from loving Elena, he gets crushed. He cared about Rose because she was a sweet person with a tragic life but he didn’t love her. If anything she made him realize how much in love he is with Elena, how he is conflicted about wanting to care, how tragic and wasted is a life without love, family, roots, she made him think hard about his life. We caught glimpses of what he is behind the facade of tough and rough, badass, selfish persona he likes everybody and himself, to think he is, we saw it in Liz and Caroline situation, when he tried to patch up things between Elena and Stefan about drinking blood and when he declared his love to Elena, how much he loves her and his brother and selflessly made her forget. Stefan loves Damon because he remembers who Damon was as human and keeps hoping he would get to see that side of him again. Becoming a vampire was the biggest misfortune that could have happen to someone as sensitive and fragile as Damon is. The two sides of who he is as human and who he is as vampire are clashing so harshly, that he had to buried down his humanity not to be crushed by the pain of who he cannot be anymore and who he has became. Life events keep pushing his humanity out with overwhelming conflicting results that cannot possibly reconcile. “I cannot be who she want me to be, because I’m not human, and I miss it more than anything in the world...There is only so much pain a man can take” it summarizes his life and that is shattering to hear and see. His final kill to that poor unfortunate girl is the visual representation of the violence of the inner conflict, the existential crisis he is enduring, alone, because he doesn’t burden anybody he cares with his troubles. He burdens a stranger and by killing her he make sure that the secret remain secret. As Rose said the killing is like a fix, like a drug the make a vampire feel good. So i try to ease the pain by killing Jessica, but it didn’t work. The last shoot on his vampire face is incredible, he just killed his pain, he killed with rage the unbearable unfairness he feel his life is. That, in a way, is how Damon writes his diary. I cannot marvel more to the level of the depth that the writers were capable to give to this character. Damon has an effect on me that never any other character ever did. Ian Somerhalder performance is outstanding. At first Ian fought against Damon showing that much level of vulnerability. I guess when you play a character for long time, you became a bit that character and Damon would die before showing others vulnerability. But Kevin Williamson made him realize that this would give his character another level of depth. He realized that and got on board with it. To bring truth to the performance, he had to go psychologically in a place he didn’t want to go and afterwards he was depressed for two days. But the result, for us viewers though, it’s magnificent and heart shattering".
