Wha...?

I would have an NPC around for narrative push and interactions, but they were sidekicks that the players would take turns using in battle. Used the rules in Tasha’s Cauldron

Bagels

The DM also being a main character can work but it is a fine line to toe. Depending on the style of campaign and story being told the DM can oversteer the party making things boring for them. In the worst case it can fly off the rails and become wish fulfillment for the DM at the expense of the players fun and personal agency. Of course as mentioned by Erroneous recurring NPCs are absolutely a thing and even necessary in many story structures. The issue really only arises when the DM gets overly attached and inflexible without consideration for the expectations and feelings of the people they are DMing for.

Yeah! Theyre basically a recurring npc! Nothing wrong with it. My DM is currently using one as a safety net for other players, help them along when they’re stuck or having a rough time in battle (Waiting for him to betray us because I KNOW THIS DM)

Erroneous

Technically? Yes. It is kind of hard to keep it from being annoying. The GM is responsible to be all of the other people in the world, though, so a recurring NPC is possible.
