[Free] Broadsword Guide to the Negative Energy Plane Monsters - True Demilich

A demilich is not a lesser form of the lich but rather its final, inevitable evolution. It is what remains when the physical husk of undeath becomes obsolete when the pursuit of knowledge stretches beyond the limits of corporeal form. In most cases, all that remains of a demilich is a single skull, its surface pitted and worn with age, often embedded with glowing gems in place of teeth—crystalline anchors that still pulse with necrotic power. The rest of its body has crumbled to dust, scattering across the tomb it once ruled. The demilich does not move. It does not need to.

Combat. A demilich does not seek battle, nor does it actively defend its domain—it simply exists, unbothered by the world around it. But should something disturb its remains, whether by greed, arrogance, or accident, the skull stirs, rising from the dust of its long-decayed body.

Its first response is almost always its deathly scream—a horrifying wail that tears at the soul itself, a force so potent that most creatures simply collapse, their spirits torn from their bodies. Those who survive the scream soon face a worse fate.

The gemmed teeth of the demilich are not merely decoration but anchors of its power, each capable of devouring the soul of a creature that meets its gaze. With a mere moment of focus, the demilich can strip a being from existence, drawing its essence into the gem where it is trapped for eternity. It has 1d4 + 4 such gems, each holding countless lost souls, echoes of past intruders who underestimated what lay before them.

If resistance persists, the dust and bones of the demilich’s former body stir, rising into a storm of razor-fine shards, swirling fragments of bone and ash that tear into any creature foolish enough to remain in its presence.

Habitat & Society. A demilich’s tomb is a monument to its long-forgotten ambition, filled with traps, labyrinthine corridors, and lingering horrors that once served a master that no longer speaks. Unlike its former self, the demilich no longer commands armies or plots against the living—it has no interest in the world it left behind. Its servants, if they still exist, carry out orders given centuries ago, unaware that their master may not have spoken in an age. Many who dwell in the demilich’s domain do not even know it is there, mistaking its skull for a relic rather than a ruler.

Ecology. The demilich requires nothing—no sustenance, no servants, no schemes. It does not hunger, nor does it hate. It is simply waiting, lingering between worlds, its thoughts stretching across the veils of existence. It will persist until time itself claims it, until the last fragment of its essence erodes into the void. To disturb a demilich is to remind it of what it once was—a grave error few survive to repeat.
