And it's somehow been 6.5 years since my original playthrough so I've forgotten everything about how to actually beat the game lol, bonus blind playthrough except for the part where I have an outsized awareness of the story this time.

I could be misremembering, but I think in the books that section of D'Ni that Atrus is trapped in has collapsed and Atrus can't get out to the real world from there. In fact didn't his father trap in there on purpose which is why he explored Riven to find his wife? I don't think he ever found a way to get back to the rest of earth from that collapsed section of D'Ni.
