Binder Playtest

So this is long overdue, huh?

For those of you who don't know, the binder is one of our pet classes from earlier editions, which we've lovingly resurrected twice now, most recently via an aritcle series on the blog. I intended to bring this class to the Patreon fully-illustrated with all the artistic bells and whistles, but due to projects taking more art, Dark Matter wrapping up, and another big book on the horizon, that's just not in the cards at the moment. You'll have the chance to see it upgraded into a Complete class with more archetypes and lots of art in the future.

For now, here's the finished class!

Love it so far! Particularly enjoyed the minor spirits and the Legion's Lodge! The utility abilities of the spirits adds a lot of flavor and potential for rp and creative use, while the Legion's Lodge grants me an excuse to focus on them. I've always enjoyed spirit focused casters, and I'm excited to try this out. As an aside, I love the wisps ability, it reminds me of an old tale I heard about the Aos Si stalking the world parallel to our own with hidden lights.

Question: Stygian's void weapon lets you forge a shield, but the class does not have shield proficiency. Is this intentional? Like, pass it off to a friend? Guessing it's also to be paired with appropriate vestiges, but it felt a little weird to see at first read.

Mike Togtman

My one sorta complaint is that the physical traits from the original class have kind of been toned down here. The aesthetic flairs like having flayed skin or a scar across your neck or giant obvious curling horns really added to the macabre feeling of the class, and while some of the higher level vestiges have similar things like cloven hooves it doesn't quite reach the same level as the original binder pdf you guys released.

Jupiter Picherack

I love this class but I have a question about my favorite Vestige, Bluetongue. Is there a time limit for breathing in his Deep Pocket's?

Knowledge&Apocalypse

Is this the place for feedback and questions for the playtest?

Jimberish

Actually, I suppose the same question must be asked of the class archetypes. Would earlier versions mix well with this playtest?

Jimberish

Do you (or any other Patrons) have any thoughts on how the earlier iterations' Vestiges balance with regards to this versions? In other words, do you foresee any 'broken' problems arising from mixing old and new Vestiges?

Jimberish

Definitely a full rewrite, rather than an update on the old version. We wanted to accomplish a few things with this class: first and foremost, getting our own vestiges in here, so we can actually publish the thing (and also to sculpt something a little more cohesive than the old vestige list.) Second, getting it as approachable as possible. Cutting the minor spirits down a lot was a big step in the simplification process and also served to make the class's balancing much more watertight.

Mage Hand Press

Whoa! This is less an update than a complete overhaul! I'm only on my first reading, so I shan't pass any judgment. I will say, though, that I find myself missing a few things that I liked about the earlier iterations; summoning a Hell Hound (sort of) and being able to access Eldritch Blast come to mind. And why the decision to dispose of the original vestiges from Tome of Magic?

Jimberish

I'm all about lack of complexity, I have only played 5e and stuff like Fate confuses me, but the Binder is still my favorite class and I'd love to get more Archetypes and more Vestiges as you make more stuff

Knowledge&Apocalypse

Also, is there an air time limit for Bluetongue's Deep Pocket's? Things like the Bag of Holding have a stated time limit so I wanted to check what it was for Bluetongue's ability

Knowledge&Apocalypse

I love me a Binder, and I'm so glad that I can finally play it. Amazing class, loved how everyone got a hand in working on it and how unique every person playing a Binder can be

Knowledge&Apocalypse

There's a lot of little balancing things we need to look into to make sure that the binder doesn't outshine full casters or full martial characters, but I don't want the binder to lag behind them either, if bound with a full load of relevant vestiges. With that in mind, I think that's actually precisely where we want the class in terms of spell points (but that doesn't mean there aren't other builds out there which need addressing.)

Mage Hand Press

Good question. In general, I don't know if the binder will _work_ as part of a broader class catalog. It's a super neat class, don't get me wrong, but I feel like the length and complexity will turn enough people away from it that including it might bog down other releases. I'm still on the fence, but that's my worry in a nutshell.

Mage Hand Press

Super excited that this is out, I love the class, and can't wait to see what the future holds for it

James Olmsted

My reading is that it's # slots whenever it says "any" and # per when it says each. So, lexicon is 2 slots, but the pyromancer has the specified number of casts for each spell listed. That does make me question the overall balance if I am right, as a 5th level character with both those would then have the equivalent of 5 lvl 1 slots, 3 lvl 2 slots, and 1 lvl 3 slot. That's a total of 24 spell points, which is very close to a full casters 27 spell point value at that level. It should not be too big of a deal, but the extra edge that the non spell abilities give them and the edge they get on damage output from the minor spirits makes me worry it might outshine normal casters. That being said, level 5 is a power spike for a lot of classes so I don't know how this tracks for the class as a whole.

So in the future, when you guys release new projects that have new character archetypes, will they also include a new vestige or two? Like if this had been completed prior to, a low level vestige in Taverns and Tankards that gets people drunk or high level vestige in the Fey Folio that gets people lost in the Feywild?

Brian Tighe

Are the spells from Lexicon 2 per or 2 "slots"?

Jack Tigue

I really like the idea behind this class!

Caleb Smith

I love the class and have been waiting for this a long time, I might actually get to play it this upcoming campaign as well. Cheers and thanks for the great work.

Devon Phillips

I literally lept out of my chair to grab my laptop as soon as I got the email on my phone that this was out! Very excited to read through it!
