Annie Hall (1977) - Uncut Version

Diane Keaton, Woody Allen, Tony Roberts, Paul Simon, Carol Kane, Shelley Duvall, Christopher Walken

I was obviously way too young the first time I saw this. I just didn’t get it. The humor went right over my head. Seeing it now as an adult has completely changed my opinion. It’s cleverly filmed and the performances are outstanding. I am so glad I rewatched it again with both of your perspectives.

Interiors is heavy, though. And stark.

And he's another great we lost this year.

My favorite is his moose joke. Never gets old.

Her apartment was famously on 70th St between Park and Lex on the Upper East Side. I like Kevin's quip about how its not $400/month anymore Same area within about one block 1 BR apt is $7,125 per month https://www.exrny.com/listings/61453/1-bed-in-upper-east-side-ny I lived on 80th in the early 90s and it was still "only" $800/month about 15 years after this scene takes place

The winner of the Truman Capote look-alike contest WAS Truman Capote when they were "mean people watching"

Woody Allen was a very successful comedian before his movies. https://youtu.be/NJZ7_fvcW58?si=HB3mEe5-4TwkxvGW. -- I remember walking home late one night from work and I wanted to stop by a bodega to pick up some fresh flowers. As I was walking past the entrance of the store, a man in a brown wool coat with an upturned collar passed me leaving the store. I picked up the flowers, stood up & turned back over my shoulder-- the man also turned around and we looked at each other. I very brilliantly said, "Huh." He smiled, shrugged his shoulders and went on about his night. It was Woody Allen. I♥️NY...

Joe and Kevin- I empathize about the driving, I LEARNED how to drive in Manhattan even though I grew up in Queens since I went to a driving school down by NYU at age 18 back in 1984 just a few years after this film- my high school didn't have "shop", typing class or Driver's Ed, so in the summer before college I went to a secretarial school full of 25 year old women to learn how to type and a Driving School that I paid for... The area she is driving in has very little traffic, its by the East River just north of the Seaport (they pass under the Brooklyn Bridge). My driving instructor would have me practice parking, 3 point turns etc over in "Alphabet City" (avenue C below 14th street) near where they were driving BUT before I graduated to my actual road test, I was going on Broadway near Times Square om a learner's permit dodging taxis...it helped to be good at the Pole Position video game like I was before heading out into Midtown traffic!

On this rewatch, it dawns on me that this movie must’ve been influential on Paul Reiser when he made his sitcom Mad About You because the comedy is similar that’s one of my favorite sitcoms of all time

Kevin- you are correct, Tony Roberts was in the original Pelham 123, he also was in Serpico

I have started way more Woody Allen movies then I have finished. The only ones I’m sure I finished are this, Blue Jasmine and Midnight in Paris. I’ve wanted to finish Hannah and her sisters so many times so you can help with that when you get to it. Interiors was another good but underrated Keaton movie that I need to give another watch. Diane Ladd just died as well who I got confused with Keaton many times in my childhood.

This would be a great double feature with Two for the Road! Also really glad they changed the title. Annie Hall is so catchy and fits the film so well

I remember in the late 70s, there was an article about a dream study.....and it turned out the most dreamed of celebrity was Woody Allen! I still don't know what to make of it! I also remember him being in a People "Sexiest Man Alive" issue in the late 70s as well. There's a clip of Diane on Ellen, and she's being shown all of the actors she's kissed, and when Woody's image came on the screen, she started gushing how cute he was. (of course, she was saying that about all of her co-stars! :D). PS: Love "Hannah". I remember the reviews saying it was his best since "Annie Hall", I couldn't get to the movie theatre fast enough! Love or like virtually all of 'em in that first 20 year period. What a run of films. Took it for granted! Then he stopped rewriting his scripts in the 90s; he does one draft, gives it a quick once-over, then shoots.

Oh guys, I’m so glad you watched this! To get the ugly part out of the way - yes, I know and agree that Woody Allen is a terrible person. The worst, clearly. But I also know he made some very good and worthy art. It creates a terrible kind of cognitive dissonance, to which there really isn’t a resolve or reduction. It just is. So thank you for giving this a chance. And from what I gather, I’m so glad you enjoyed the parts of it that you did. Diane Keaton is an absolute dream in this. The charming eccentricity of her performance is infectious. And then there’s her style - for as much as I’d like to think I could pull off Grace Kelly’s style, in reality I think I’m much more of a Diane Keaton. Don’t get me wrong, this is no loss. She is beyond wonderful. “Was Woody Allen an attractive man?” / “Personality goes a long way.” — Oh darlings… Darlings… The character of Alfie is problematic to be sure, but you seem to have no idea how far a bit of wit and intellect can take you. The lack of it is a large part of why I gave up on dating apps… Perhaps I betray too much of my own bias there, but no matter… I look forward to hearing what you think of Hannah and Her Sisters :)

It's been so many years since I've seen this, and I'd forgotten about many of the truly hysterical bits. I'm so glad it still holds up after nearly 50 years. The original title for the movie was "Anhedonia", which is a psychological term meaning the inability to experience pleasure or enjoyment from activities that were previously pleasurable. The film studio hated that title, so at the last minute Allen changed it. I never realized until today how similar the narrative structure is to "Two for the Road", which you just watched.
