I absolutely agree with you about the characters in When Harry Met Sally (maybe the best romcom I’ve seen). I thought the lead characters here were flat early on, but some depth emerged a bit once we got to the Lu au scene.

2025-11-05 01:26:23 +0000 UTCI absolutely had The Philadelphia Story in mind during this. You’re right, Bob does infantilize Maggie. I just took that as his entire life being a sports cliche more than patriarchal. But infantilization is a fair take, especially considering what her potential life would hw like with him.

2025-11-05 00:06:47 +0000 UTCFirst - Happy Birthday Kate! I forgot about the writing in this movie - there are some really nice one-liners in there. “Bob’s a good guy.” …Is he? He’s not overtly mean, I’ll grant you that. But he is incredibly infantilizing towards Maggie. Not that she’s perfect; she has one of the worst cases of people-pleasing ever put on film. But still. No reason to treat her like a child. On a lighter note, I can’t help but think that this movie takes inspiration from films like “It Happened One Night” and “Philadelphia Story,” and that’s a fun thought :)

2025-11-04 22:35:19 +0000 UTCI didn't like Gere's character at all- it reminded me of the Robert Redford character in The Way We Were.... The characters in When Harry Met Sally were much more relatable and three-dimensional and one can root for them. Here not so much given how cliche and cardboard they were...especially Gere's character and a bit Roberts'

2025-11-04 06:59:20 +0000 UTCThis was better than I remembered. I still think the rushed wedding is silly, and I actually judge her the LEAST for that particular run. They barely know each other! I always loved the device with the eggs, and how it represents how she subsumes herself in relationships and turns herself into the perfect person for the guy she's with, instead of working on herself and figuring herself out. And heck yes, that late 90s soundtrack! It's interesting that you watched this first. I remember one of my criticisms of this movie being the references to Pretty Woman, which obviously I won't spoil. It will be interesting to see if all of those node are less noticeable in reverse. Also, for some reason, the FedEx joke is the funniest thing in this movie to me.

2025-11-04 06:28:40 +0000 UTCI'm embarrassed to say that I have not seen this movie yet. I'll probably watch with you guys. Side fact, I used to be a musician in LA. I worked on a song by Shawn Colvin that got into this movie. It's called "Never Saw Blue Like That" I'm curious to see how it was used.

2025-11-04 06:05:44 +0000 UTCThank you! That's incredible! I would've loved to have worked on this movie... doing hair and makeup, or bringing coffee, whatever they needed! LOL! I grew up on the coast of CT, not too far away. I used to go through that area on my way to VA to see my sister. Beautiful country out there! This movie should have gotten a bigger spotlight on it, but Pretty Woman (1990) was casting such a big shadow on it, that it went almost entirely unnoticed! I have loved this movie since day one. This was about the only way I could think of to get people see both of these movies for the first time, back to back to compare and contrast, both movies! It's time Runaway Bride (1999) got some spotlight! You must have the best memories from that shoot. It's stunningly beautiful with all the colors of fall!

2025-11-04 05:36:52 +0000 UTCThis movie got buried in comparisons to Pretty Woman. Unfortunately with You’ve Got Mail coming out around the same time it became a story of Hollywood’s just trying to re-capture old magic. Plus Notting Hill which was received much better was around the same time even though this is a more enjoyable movie I think then that was. This movie started as Pretty Woman 2 but Julia has an issue with sequels and refused to sign on if this wasn’t a completely separate picture, which was a good call. Another romcom I always put in the category with this one is Sweet Home Alabama. I haven’t seen that one in a while but I remember that movie reminded me of this one.

2025-11-04 05:05:17 +0000 UTCThe exteriors where Richard Gere is driving the exteriors where you see the church are two towns a hundred miles away. I’m still impressed how seamless this looks Many years after the movie, my best friends family bought the bar where we filmed the luau scenes.

2025-11-04 04:11:48 +0000 UTCKatie, Happy Birthday and thank you for requesting this movie. I worked on this film as an intern doing 2nd location scouting and production design. The town in the film is real. It’s real name is Berlin, MD it’s about 20 minutes from Ocean City. I worked on the fall scenes with the big fields and the running away from the altar montage which was shot all over the state
