i think the thing that kills me about epiphany is that everything you said re: misinfo about covid and med professionals is true, but the song was released only 4 months into the pandemic, before most of that started. it really captures the fear of that time, of healthcare workers fighting something that no one understood, before we really even knew how it was transmitted. "holds your hand through plastic now" absolutely guts me because it's so evocative of the images of that time - grandparents seeing their grandkids for the first time through windows, people saying goodbye to their loved ones through facetime because hospitals didn't allow visitors, the medical workers doing what little they could to provide peace and care to patients when they were struggling too

When her masters were sold they wanted Taylor to sign an NDA and never speak about it publicly but she didn't and instead wrote a long note explaining everything to her fans (hence the line I didn't have it in myself to go with grace). my tears ricochet - well, while Taylor is indeed doing fine and the re recordings ended up being a plataform for new heights it's still important to be aware that it was and still is something deeply disturbing for her. Not only because of it being her art but also because Scott Borchetta was like another parent for her and he ruthelessly betrayed her, despite her willingness to buy her work herself. He also did it when the reason he created the discographic was to create a place within the industry where artists would have more creative freedom ("you turned into your worst fears")

exile is the main metaphor of the song. the other person was their land, by ending their relationship they are now in exile - it is brought together by the lyrics "you're not my homeland anymore" and "you were my crown". "leaving out the sidedoor" goes with the movie submetaphor and one, it's a congruence choice as a lot of movie teathers have doors on the side of the big screen; and two those doors are used both by staff "so inland/homeland people" but also as an additional exit in case of emergency , which is another piece to interpretation

Omg this reaction is so incredible! Exacltywhat you said at the end ”its open for us to interperate”, is exactly why I didn’t include more song info in the document. I think every song should be heard for yourself first, then we will always give you context after. And in the case of folklore, taylor will in the long pond doc. Which you should do before evermore. Mostly because its only about the folklore album and not evermore. I think, folklore, long pond, evermore is a greah order and then you can do the live performances, extra songs and music videos combined at the end OR the ones i sent in the folklore document before evermore. That really doesn’t matter since its so close together all of it. Folklore is, in my opinion, her best put together album from start to finish. Not saying that the other aren’t great because they are but folklore just has that perfect thread of matching stories, production and vocals to make such an amazing put together album. agggghhhh i really need you to google the folklore “love triangle!! 🥹🥹 the songs cardigan, august and betty are tied together. cardigan is from betty’s perspective, who has been cheated on by james with augusta. betty is from james’ perspective, coming to the belated realization that he never should’ve startet with augusta and wants to get betty back. finally, august is from the perspective of augusta (taylor mentions in long pond that that’s the name she had in mind for the girl james cheats on betty with) where she admits she fell in love with james during their summer fling, but she always knew he didn’t have deeper feelings for her and would probably disappear out of her life soon again.. look out in the songs for the parallels!!

Besides Taylor being really amazing with words (duuh) and the prologues being fantastic standalone pieces of writing, they really do set the mood and give valuable insights on the album you are about to jump into for the first time. “my tears ricochet“ was my gateway song to get really committed to taylor its in general about betrayal, but knowing everything that hurt me fired back was really freeing. but the way she puts that very much not relatable story into words and makes it relatable is just crazy. scott burchetta was lowkey a noone, taylor was striving through bars as a teenager doing gigs in nashville looking to be discovered, scott burchetta came up to her an was interested, but at this point he didnt even had a label, he surely was known locally, but he build big machine records with and thanks to taylor, then later on scooter braun came after her and she hated him, what scott knew, although taylor was aware that her masters will be sold she didnt expect scott to sell it to the person she hated so much, while she basically gave him the power and privileges he had at this time. it’s the ultimate betrayal of someone she grow up with and actually supported her until she developed an own identity

long pond before evermore makes sense to get a bit more feeling for her and her songwriting. and you definitely drew the correct connection in the last great american dynasty, and i didnt thought myself she was that literal, but she actually bought the house rebekah harkness lived in and used her story to tell us something about herself, which is just clever songwriting. and little fun fact: rebekah originally coloured a cat key lime green but taylor changed it to a dog, bc she loves cats so much. also exile is one of the songs, i mentioned in another reaction, that she wrote with her now ex partner and was mentioned in “you’re losing me” when she said “how long could we be a sad song”

throughout her entire career taylor always talked about writing a stripped back acoustic album that focused entirely on the writing and storytelling. she never felt like she could do it because the demand for radio singles and songs that would “sound good performed live on tour.” after she canceled her tour “LoverFest” which was scheduled in 2020 due to Covid-19, Taylor felt like she could essentially do whatever she wanted without feeling the pressure to satisfy a label. she goes more in depth in the Longpond studio sessions.

You can tell in long Pond Jack's not buying Joe as a co-writer for one second. I find it telling too Jack says they've never met even though Jack is basically Taylor's best friend and she and Joe had been together years and years at that point. Thank you for the shutout During the song “epiphany”, haha the pandemic was a double whammy for me My mom was a Nurse who ended up having to take care of patients who were too far gone to be in the ICU they were able to save some of those patients but the majority she would see die, and I was a Pharmacy Technician during the time so I had to watch a lot of patients deteriorate to the point of needing the ICU and sometimes I would get the call to mark them deceased shortly after and it was just a hellish time all around. Me and my mom could actually just look at each other in a single glance and know exactly what the other had experienced that day. And then you mentioned all the issues that happen in the healthcare industry, and that’s why my Profile Picture is me in a suit. In 2023 I departed the Pharmacy to focus full time on becoming a Lawyer - specifically so I could one day litigate and change the policies and inadequacies that I know of, so that hopefully one day healthcare and especially the care received when dying aren’t so cruel, expensive, and neglectful. I was also born with a full set of Great & Regular Grandparents - so I have seen that play out countless times as I lost them and it’s created a passion for defending and speaking up for them- most systems in our society seem to write them off and neglect them and it pissed me off enough to make me enroll. Funnily enough the pandemic had a similar effect on my mother and she walked out the hospital in 2023 to oversee the processing of medicare claims - with mindset of doing everything in her power to get those claims approved.

Also, you did SO GOOD at interpreting these lyrics, especially with just getting to know the lore behind the songs. “Cardigan”, “August”, and “Betty” tell a story about a teenage love-triangle, where “Cardigan” is narrated by Betty, “August” is narrated by Augustine, and “Betty” is narrated by James. Basically James and Betty were in a relationship and James made her feel super special, but then was fooling around with Augustine on the side… and yes, behind the mall. 😂🤣😭

Long pond first. What you missed when researching “the last great American dynasty” is that it’s a true story. Taylor actually bought the Rhode Island house Rebekah owned! 😂 You loving mirrorball warms my heart bc it’s one of my favorite TS songs EVER. ❤️ I found it hilarious that you got SO many of the songs’ meanings correct, but completely out of context. 😂 You did a fantastic job interpreting the songs on your own, but I think what stumped you on a few tracks is not realizing that some of the songs are Taylor singing from the perspectives of different characters she made up, so many of the songs are not about her personally. Excited for you to watch the long pond sessions and see Taylor, Aaron, and Jack explain all of the songs in detail! You calling yourself “Detective Danny” at the end was so cute. I’m taking credit for calling you that first! haha Side note: I hope they play epiphany at RFK Jr’s funeral. 😂

It’s actually so interesting to me that Exile wasn’t the track 5 for this album. Like, NO DISRESPECT to My Tears Ricochet (because it’s literally a masterpiece), but Exile just seems to be so parallel, lyrically, to her relationship with Joe. Like, that song is actually so devastating, I would be shocked if she hadn’t contemplated making it a track 5 at some point.

Cardigan, August and Betty are all part of the same story taylor created. They are part of a teenage love-triangle, and each song tells the pov of each character. Cardigan - it's Betty's version, where she is cheated on by James, and gets him back in the end. August - it's the pov of the girl James spends his summer with, where he didn't care about her, but she was in love with him. Betty- it's James pov, where he apologizes to Betty. (btw is a terrible apology)

Definitely Long Pond, then Evermore! You will appreciate Long Pond so so much and I am counting down until you react to it! My favorite song on this album is peace because I take it also as loving someone with anxiety or other mental or physical health struggles and being like "I will love you with all of my heart and be there for you, but I can't ever give you peace because I will always be fighting this, and is my love for you enough for you to stand behind me and support me during my struggles and for us to get through this together?" Truly an emotional song that is so wonderfully written. This whole album is simply breathtaking. Amazing reaction!
