                                                                                  The Folklore:

The original inspiration for this audio was from Inuit culture, a creature known as Amarok or Amaroq. This creature is said to stalk and devour any person foolish enough to hunt alone at night. Unlike wolves who hunt in packs, Amaroks hunt alone. Several stories are told of the Amarok and their interactions with humans, one in particular which is used as a loose basis of this audio. A persecuted and physically stunted boy seeks to increase his strength, and when he calls upon the lord of strength, an Amarok appears and wrestles him to the ground with its tail and some small bones fall from the boy's body. The Amarok explains that these bones prevented his growth and he instructs the boy to return daily to develop his strength. The myth of the Amarok is theorized to be developed/originated from tales Ancient Inuit tribes told about direwolves.

There is another myth known as "The Great Bear" which tells a story of Bears who can remove their skin and become human (or vice versa: men who can put on the skin of bears and become them). 

Other folklore pertaining to werewolves and were-creatures are mentioned in this audio including:

Nagual—A Mexican/Mesoamerican creature that are believed to be powerful men who can transform themselves into animals to cause harm. However some beliefs vary from region to region, as some believe that the Nagual are a guardian spirit that resides within an animal.

Lobizon—A creature from indigenous Paraguay that stated that there were seven original monsters, and that the Luison had a horrendous appearance (no actual reference to looking like a wolf) who became known as the god of death. However, when Europeans colonized South America and Christianized it, legends of werewolves were mixed with the legends of Luison, and morphed the legend into the Lubizon, someone who is half wolf, half man.

Bouda—A primarily Ethiopian legend/belief (but also practiced/believed in areas of Sudan, Tanzania and Morocco) that spoke of were-hyenas. It was/is believed that every blacksmith is a witch/wizard with the power to turn themselves into a hyena at night, and then resume human form at dawn.  Some Ethiopian Christians believe that Ethiopian Jews are bouda, thinking they unearth and eat Christian corpses and eating them. Traditional profession for Jewish men in Ethiopia is blacksmith, a possible connection. Bouda is the power of the evil eye and the ability to change into a hyena. The power of the evil eye allows it's bearer to change into a hyena, allowing them to attack another person while concealing their identity.

Ok, with the long—but incredibly important!—Folklore explanation out of the way, onto my explanation lol. My initial thought with Muriel was to do something more monster-porny, since I think he has a great character to do that with, but I also didn't want to claim that he was one specific creature from a specific lore since I didn't want to insult that culture, and I didn't want to do a retelling of any of the stories and change them to make them sexy--again, disrespectful. Instead I settled on not distinctly saying what he is, but referencing what he has been called before and citing the folklore that this was very loosely inspired by. I particularly was attracted to the Inuit stories because Muriel's thematic animals in the game are a bear and a wolf and the Inuit culture has specific myths about skin changers/creatures based on those animals. So he's like a were-wolf-bear-man, thing lol. Also, Muriel's attitude is quite different from normal in this audio. I sort of thought that maybe this is more of the attitude he'd have if he was a centuries old creature, and also referencing perhaps his more animalistic nature that he has when he was a Gladiator in the game. I sincerely hope that that makes sense to anyone else other than me, and I hope you enjoy the audio. Please let me know if there are any issues I might have missed!
