171: Bandt’s giant toothbrush & how to vote in Macnamara

Congrats to Dutton for winning the first debate (presumably?), and to Jason Clare for not knowing the second one existed. Emerald and Tom take a look at Adam Bandt’s appearance at the National Press Club (10:26). Greens want to wind back handouts for property investors, and of course that whole dental and mental into Medicare thing. Then, a look at the seat of Macnamara in Melbourne (41:18). Why wasn’t the Greens candidate Sonya Semmens welcome at the Jewish Community Election Forum? Will Josh Burns bravely choose to not do how-to-vote cards? (Spoiler - that’s what happened.) Finally, a call to action (1:10:04).

In answer to your question "Why is Josh Burns running an open ticket": Josh Burns will win the seat if the Liberals fall into third place. Or if the Greens fall into third place. So if he gets Liberal supporting Jewish voters to vote 1 Labor and 2 Liberal, and his vote goes up enough that he ends up in the top two, then he'll win. It's not dissimilar to what happened with the teals in the last election - all the teal seats still voted Liberal on the 2pp vote. In order for a teal to win they had to be in the final two. So Josh Burns is signaling to conservative Jews that they can vote for him and preference the Liberals to keep the Greens out. But he's not running a ticket which explicitly puts the Liberals ahead of Labor because then he would lose progressive voters. Which he might anyway! Honestly I think it's a risky strategy. Ironically, if the Liberals decided that they wanted to get rid of the Greens completely from the House of Reps, all they would need to do is *not run* candidates in seats we were trying to win, and Labor would win them all.

Spirit of Anger and Hope

Thanks for the good discussion about Macnamara. Looking at our candidates here has just about driven me to despair! From best to worst they are: 💚 Renter & renters’ rights advocate 💚; genocide supporter (red); genocide supporter (blue); Libertarian cooker; One Nation cooker; disgraced ex-doctor & serial sexual assaulter. Save me Sonya Semmens! Sonya Semmens… save me…
