I always start off by creating the orchestra parts for the song. It usually takes less than an hour to recreate it, because I've gotten pretty good at identifying the different parts and different instruments.
After the orchestra is done I just record each orchestra part on the guitar, it gives me a nice simple process of just taking the MIDI and recording it section by section. At this point in the song I'm not worried about mistakes or fret noise or tempo, I just want to get a feel for the song to make sure it sounds right. I also cheat as much as possible by using copy and paste, pitch shifting and time warping to put things into place.
This is version 1 of the song, version 2 will have the final recordings in place and will sound mostly the same as what you hear in the final song. However on average there's about 10 versions for every song, most of the changes I make are EQ fixes and volume adjustments to make sure every sounds balanced.
