Paling Around at the Pond – Playdate #2
A few days had passed since Yosh first met Tulip, who he learned was the reason the big moving truck had been making all that noise a few houses down around the time preschool had let out for the Spring holiday. She was a friendly duckling who was roughly the same age as he was, still wore diapers, and had a great love for the family of feral ducks that had decided to start a family at the O’Ducky family pond.
FLA-WHOOSH!
SPR-SPR-PL-PL-OP-SPRINKLE-PLOP!
“Whee!” the yellow-feathered duckling cheered as she flung a handful of birdseed towards the mother and the trio of babies that were following after her as she waded around the shallow pond.
Yosh, who remembered to bring out the corn his dad had set out for him to feed the duck family, let out a few quacks himself as he tossed out a handful of treats towards the father duck who was swimming a short distance away from his wife and kids.
FWOOF
PA-PLO-PA-PLOP-PAP
Father duck did not move from his spot to go after any of the feed corn that Yosh had lobbed in his direction.
“Maybe he not hungry…?” the dino-duckling wondered to himself in a way that showed how sad and disappointed he was that daddy duck had shown no interest in what he so generously tossed out for him to eat.
“Maybe he no like corn?” suggested Tulip as she took out another handful of the birdseed she had brought and pitched it like a softball towards the papa duck.
SPRI-SPLO-OP-OP
TAP-BA-BOP
Tulip’s toss of treats was far more accurate than Yosh’s attempt to offer food for the father duck. However, her aim turned out to be too accurate as some of the birdseed rained down upon his head and back.
SPLOOSH!
QUA-QUACK-QUACK-QUACK!
FLA-FLA-FLAP-FLAP!
“Yikes!” cried Tulip as she covered her face with her brown-tipped wings.
“Kazootles!” squawked Yosh as he squeezed his eyes shut, turned his head to face away from the mad mallard, and took a few awkward steps away from the pond.
“There, there,” Mrs. O’Ducky said with reassurance as she placed a hand on each of the startled children’s shoulders. “Father duck is just trying to let you know that he wants to be left alone while his wife and kids enjoy their lunch.”
Yosh opened his eyes and looked up to see his mother smiling down at him.
“So he’s not hungry?” he asked. “Don’t families eat meals together?”
“Not always,” the Yoshi mother replied. “It’s like why your daddy goes to work while I stay home to take care of you, your little sister, and your new friend here.”
“Why?” Tulip questioned as she joined Yosh in staring up towards the maternal figure who had been tasked to watch her that day.
Mrs. O’Ducky let out a warmhearted laugh before moving her hands to pet both Yosh and Tulip upon their heads.
“Mommies and daddies just do what they have to for their babies,” she cooed. “No two families look out for each other and their children the same way. However, just like the feral family in our pond, you can feel happy in knowing mommies and daddies love each other, their children, and are always making sure you kiddos are happy, healthy, and full of smiles.”
SNEAK-SLIP
SLIP-CRINKLE
Mrs. O’Ducky took this special moment to see if the recent scare caused the pair of preschoolers to piddle their pampers. Sure enough, both Yosh and Tulip had wet themselves, but not enough to require the pair put an immediate end to the fun they were having with the duck family.
“How about you two be extra gentle and make sure the food you have left lands safely by mommy duck so she can show her babies how to dabble for their dinner?” she suggested while looking back to see Winry, Yosh’s baby sister, sitting comfortably and starting to doze off in her car seat. “It’s about time for your naps and I have a special surprise for both of you after you wake up with big, bright smiles on your beaks.”
Yosh and Tulip smiled back at Mrs. O’Ducky, looked towards each other, and went about quickly dropping the rest of the food they had brought for the duck family all around the mother who was letting out lots of quick quacks as her ducklings cheeped along while trying to do as their mother was instructing them to do.
“Okay,” Mrs. O’Ducky said as she reached a hand out towards her son. “Tulip, I need you to hold Yosh’s other hand so I can carry little Winry back inside.”
CLASP
“Okay!” the brown-and-yellow feathered duckling replied while wasting no time in clasping the green-and-white colored, dino-duckling’s free hand. “Let’s go!”
The group playfully made their way back towards the O’Ducky’s house as the family of feral ducks finished their food and, like their anthropomorphic counterparts, headed back to their shaded nest hidden in the tall grass to rest until they would return for more fun in the pond during the forthcoming evening.
