\"Paling Around at the Pond"

CHIRP-CHIRP

FEE-BEE

A chorus of birds were singing from nearly every possible perch around Yosh’s house.

CA-CLICK

FWOOM-SLAM!

“GABOO!”  quacked Yosh, the dino-duckling, as all the chirping outside meant that  it was now time to feed the new family of ducks that had made their  home in and around the O’Ducky family pond.

PIT-PAT

RUSTLE-CRINKLE

PAT-PIT

The  green-scaled and white-feathered, dino-duck hybrid was so excited to  get out and visit the new family of ducks that he had completely  forgotten to put anything on except for his glasses and the blue shirt  his mother had started to dress him in after having changed him out of  his overnight diaper.

QUACK

QUACK

CHEEP-CHEEP-CHEEP

Yosh  was close to the pond and was so excited to hear that he had made it  out in time before the ducklings’ mother and father returned their  babies back into the tall grass that concealed their nest on the  opposite side of the pond.

“Quack, quack, quack!” a voice playfully chirped.  “Duckies!”

FWoo-LAP!

P-P-P-P-PL-PL-OP-OP-PLOP

“Huh…?”  Yosh thought aloud as he suddenly became aware that there was more than  just the new family of feral ducks having fun at the pond this morning.

SCHLIP!

“Whoa!” the dino-duckling gasped as his abrupt change in pace caused his feet to fly out from underneath him.

PUMPF!

Being  still in diapers at four years old certainly had its advantages.   Today, the bespectacled, blue-eyed boy was spared a sore and wet  patootie thanks to his fresh diaper’s plasticky, outer shell coupled  with its pillowy interior.

“Hehe,”  a girl’s voice giggled upon having her attention taken away from the  family of feral ducks to see Yosh sitting with his arms, legs, and head  all appearing to be trying to go in every possible direction except for  straight ahead.  “You fall down and go boom.”

QUACK-QUACK

CHEEP-CHEEP-CHEEP

FLAP-AP-APPA-FLAP!

The  sound of the feral duck family enjoying their first swim on this crisp,  Spring morning was all that could be heard as Yosh took a moment to  figure out why today’s morning visit to the family pond was different  from what he had come to expect it to be.

FUMP

“You  okay?” the anthropomorphic duckling, who wore a bright-red shirt and  skirt outfit that did little to hide her diapers, asked as she dropped  the bag of birdseed she had been using to feed the duck family.  “You  need help up?”

Yosh  let out a chirping sound that was like those being made by the feral  ducklings in the pond.  He then adjusted his glasses so he could get a  better view of the preschool-aged duckling, whose face had brown-colored  markings on it, who now had her wing extended towards him.

CLASP

“Hello,”  greeted Yosh with a groan as his grass-stained hand took hold of the  young girl’s wing.  “My name’s Yosh.  Yosh E. O’Ducky.”

“Hehe,” the duckling giggled as a blush formed on her cheeks.  “I’m Tulip and you need a bath.”

It  was now Yosh’s turn to turn red in the cheeks as he felt embarrassed  for not only getting himself covered in grass stains, but making Tulip  all yucky in the wing by just helping him up from the dew-covered  grass.

“Sorry  for getting gooey-grass on you,” he bashfully apologized while using  any spot he could find on his shirt and diaper he could to wipe off his  hands.

“Is fine,” she quacked with a smile.  “Want to feed duckies with me?”

“…,”  Yosh found himself at a loss for words upon realizing that he had not  only ran outside without his vest, shorts, socks, and shoes on, but also  forgot to bring out the bag of feed corn his father had made for him to  take outside while out feeding the duckies with his mother and baby  sister.

SHAKE-SHAKE

FWUP

“I  go first if you making potty in your dipper,” Tulip stated upon  reopening the bag of birdseed and taking notice of the far-off stare  Yosh was making as he stood with a dopy look on his face that was only  made dopier by how his arms and legs were slightly spread outward from  his body’s center.  “I save some for you when you done.”

“Oh,  Yosh,” the green-colored mother to the grass-stained preschooler sighed  as she made her way towards the pond with his newborn sister, Winry,  strapped into a front-facing, backpack-like harness.  “It’s not like I  don’t already have a ton of laundry to do.”

Yosh turned to face his mother with one of the saddest looks a child of his age could muster.

“Sorry, mommy,” he said.  “I was just so excited.”

“Hi!”  greeted Tulip with a wave of her brown-tipped wings towards the, now,  squirming duck-dino that was being held firmly against Yosh’s mother’s  chest.  “What’s your name?  My name’s Tulip.  Want to feed duckies with  me?”

Winry,  who was covered in yellow-colored feathers despite looking more like  her mother, who had green-and-white colored lizard-like skin, stopped  her fussing and smiled towards the diapered duckling that was looking up  at her.

“Quashi,” she spittled.  “Quashi-quashi!”

“You  must be Tulip,” Mrs. O’Ducky greeted while bending down to better face  the duckling.  “Winry is too little to feed the duckies with you, but  you can feed the new family of ducks with her older brother, Yosh.”

Yosh  blushed as he noticed his mom giving him a look that was meant to  remind him of how he needs to remember to listen before just rushing out  the front door.  The last thing he wanted was a ‘Time Out’ where his  mom, being a Yoshi, would encase him inside of an egg for four whole  minutes until letting him out to see if he had learned his lesson.

“Oh,  don’t give me that look,” the loving mother said while slinging off the  diaper bag she had brought, pulling out a changing mat, and preparing  what she needed to quickly clean off her son and change him into fresh  clothes.  “Now get over here and let me tidy you up before Tulip and the  duckies go away until later this afternoon.”

***

Tulip  was surprised to see how smart Yosh could be when he took the time to  listen to his mother and not give into his toddler-like instincts.  She  definitely admired his energy and certainly wanted to be friends with  the dino-duck hybrid.  Especially since she, like Yosh, was going to be  starting Kindergarten at the same school as he was at the end of the  forthcoming summer.  Knowing that he, like her, still was dependant on  diapers made her less nervous of not being potty trained like the rest  of the kids, too.

“We  friends forever,” stated Tulip before pursing her beak to give Yosh a  playful smooch upon his feathery-white cheek.  “Want to feed duckies  with me tomorrow?”

Yosh blushed upon being playfully smooched by his newest friend.

“Uh-huh,” he replied bashfully while looking away and rubbing a hand over the spot Tulip had kissed him upon the cheek.

“I go home now,” she said.  “Ready for my snack and nappy-nap.”

Yosh  watched as his new, duckling friend waddled her way to the sidewalk  where, upon taking a closer look, he saw a mother duck waiting with a  simple stroller and diaper bag slung over her shoulders.  He then saw  the mother duck wave towards him as Tulip eagerly strapped herself into  the stroller to go where her mommy intended for them to make their way  back home for her midday snack and afternoon nap.

“You,  too, Yosh!” called Mrs. O’Ducky as she gestured back towards the family  home.  It’s time for you and your baby sister to take your naps.”

Yosh  took one last glance towards the pond, which no longer had any members  of the feral duck family swimming within its waters, before turning  himself around and scampering back towards where his mom was, now,  holding the front door of the house open.

“Coming,  mommy!” he cried as, thanks to the grass now being much dryer, he  quickly made his way back to do as he was told to do before running  ahead of his mother and baby sister into the house.
