Status Window Chapter 39 : The Hunt for Event Points

39. The Hunt for Event Points

The argument battle with Mom started so suddenly. That back-and-forth, packed tight with game-like elements, turned out to be a more fun event than I could have ever imagined.

But what made me even happier was that I got event points.

Honestly, until that moment, I’d been skeptical. I figured “events” were just something that happened on a whim of the developers (?).

But this time made it clear. If you meet the conditions, an event will actually trigger.

The moment I thought that, the gears in my head started turning at full speed.

Maybe if I seriously clash opinions with someone. Or make a different choice than usual in my daily life. Or maybe even deliberately stick my neck into trouble.

If I take “actions with narrative potential” like that, couldn’t I make an event happen?

If that’s the case, the world is about to get a whole lot more interesting.

Until now, the only real way to gather points was the gacha. You can get some from daily quests, but right now, they’re basically just a small bonus.

It all depended on luck, and if you got a bad pull, it was just pure emptiness. All you could do was slump your shoulders and think, “No good today, huh…”

But what if… what if I could trigger events based on my own actions?

That would be a completely different game.

Effort and ingenuity would be directly converted into points. Choosing my options would have real meaning. The very act of thinking about “what to do” would become fun.

If an argument battle gives this many points, then what about a persuasion event, a cooperation event, or maybe even unlocking a friendship route…?

One thought led to another, and a smile naturally spread across my face.

…No, wait. If this happened with my mom, could it happen with other people too? Family, teachers, the neighbors, classmates—

Aren’t there still tons of dormant events out there?

A future free from relying on the gacha for points. Points earned by my own will—by choosing, acting, and earning them. The more I think about it, the more excited I get.

Alright. What kind of event should I go trigger next?

“Morning—!”

As usual, I was jogging along the route to school when I passed another student. Normally, I’d just greet them and keep running. But today was different.

I came to a stop right beside her and matched her pace. The student looked over at me, confused.

“Um… You’re the girl who always just says hi, right? What’s up today?”

“Let’s battle!”

“Huh?”

“Our eyes met. So, it’s time to battle!”

Just a greeting is such a waste! There are as many events as there are people! So I’ve gotta engage!

“A-A battle? N-No… I don’t do stuff like that…”

“Then let’s battle someday!”

“Eh… Well, okay…?”

Hmm. I guess a battle event won’t trigger so easily with a stranger.

Can’t be helped. I’ll just consider this setting a flag for later.

I started running again and called out to another student walking a little ways ahead.

“Morning—!”

“Oh, morning. You’re full of energy today, too.”

“Our eyes just met! Let’s battle!”

“A-A battle? That’s a bit much…”

“Got it! Battle with me when you feel like it! See ya!”

“…She’s even weirder than I thought.”

I pretended I didn’t hear the small murmur from behind me.

It’s fine. If I just keep trying, an event is bound to hit eventually.

Believing this, I ran down the school road, searching for my next target.

“Morning, everyone—!”

I opened the classroom door and greeted my classmates.

“Morning, Rio.”

“Mornin’.”

“Good morning.”

“Alright! Let’s battle!”

At my declaration, the classroom’s atmosphere froze for a beat. The next moment—

“…Huh?”

“That’s what you say after ‘good morning’?”

“Yeah, yeah, you’re full of beans today, too.”

It was just as I expected, or maybe even more so. My classmates didn’t seem particularly surprised and started heading to their seats.

Huh? Did they just brush me off?

“Hey, wait! C’mon, before you get to your desks! How about a quick battle?!”

“A battle over what?”

“An argument! A battle of wits! A clash of wills!”

“Isn’t that a bit much for first thing in the morning?”

“Too sleepy, can’t.”

“I don’t have that kind of energy.”

A barrage of perfectly reasonable retorts flew my way.

“C’mon, please! It’s, like, an event thing!”

“An event?”

“Yeah, an event! When it triggers, you get points—”

I stopped mid-sentence, snapping my mouth shut. Whoops. That’s classified information.

However, my classmates had reached their own conclusion.

“Ahhh…”

“I see.”

“So it’s that again today.”

Which “that” is it?

“You know, that thing. That weird mood Rio gets into sometimes.”

“The one where her morning energy is way too high.”

“Not sometimes. Regularly.”

What kind of treatment is this?!

“No! I have a real reason this time!”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“We get it, we get it.”

“Come on, let’s just get to our seats, ‘kay?”

Not a single person was taking me seriously.

“Okay, then! I’ll give you a two-choice question! Let’s argue over which one is right!”

“Why are you assuming we’re going to argue?”

“Whoever wins is correct!”

“But that settles it peacefully.”

N-No way! This isn’t turning into a battle at all! Why?! I’m trying so hard to start something!

“Th-Then… someone, contradict me!”

“There’s no reason to.”

“Should I just roast your entire existence?”

“Nah, that’d just be sad, let’s not.”

Ripples of soft laughter spread. It had completely turned into “Watch Rio Say Weird Things” time.

…This is weird. It got so heated with my mom.

“Maybe there’s a family bonus?”

“What’s she talking about?”

“She’s started talking to herself.”

“Okay, Morning Rio Observation Time is over.”

Just then, the bell rang, and our homeroom teacher entered the classroom.

“Alright, good morning. Please take your seats.”

With those words, the classroom instantly switched back to its normal mode. I grumbled to myself as I sat down in my seat.

Grh… Isn’t the event difficulty level super high with classmates?

Looking around, everyone was getting ready as usual, as if nothing had happened.

I see. This must be one of those things where events are harder to trigger with people you’re too familiar with in your daily life.

Right, this is just a hypothesis. I just haven’t tested it enough yet.

I faced forward and quietly clenched my fist.

It’s fine. The day has only just begun.

Next time, I’ll trigger an event for sure.
