[Reality] The Unit - Ep 11 Reaction

Funfact, this was the week where the #1 rank for both the boys and the girls was "Euijin". I think this mission was when I started liking Seyong. They really tried making him in to the bad guy and I think that's what turned a lot of people off. He's very straightforward, doesn't surgarcoat anything, and he just had the face and attitude KBS needed for a "bad guy" character. But like you pointed out, he is someone who has star qualities; great performer, good leader, and is pretty/handsome to look at. Also the comment to Dongmyeong after the "All Day " performance about him keeping up with the group was referencing his dancing. Since he's part of a band, he doesn't have much formal dance training so Rain is impressed that he's been able to keep up with the rest of them. "All Day" is definitely my favorite song from this show. I still listen to it to this day.

regarding dong myeong i think you should watch his recent performances with his band 'onewe' he has definitely grown and found his stage persona which is really amazing <3 ^_^

Idk a lot about myname but I don't feel that way about Seyong (maybe because I can understand him idk? And I can be very impulsive), all I see is this show wanting to be dramatic so bad lol. Just look at how they edited that clip where he dropped the sketchbook they made it sound like a game of throne trailer. I feel like this show made him so dirty for nothing. Edit: I just checked his zodiac sign and he's a scorpio not surprising 😂

I can't imagine A.C.E without Chan, but I would absolutely stan the All Day group if they hadn't been just a temporary unit. All of the songs in this ep and the next one were produced for the show and yeah the snippets at the end were previews for the Unit G songs.

Oh I forgot to mention it's interesting what you said about Jun's development since The Unit. Getting into A.C.E. quite late I always wondered why they even bothered having 2 main vocal positions and didn't just have the whole vocal line as main vocals like Day6 since Jun is so good now. But looking back at these performances again I realised that he might not have been quite at the same level yet at this point? I'm no vocal expert though so I'm mostly basing this on your analysis, but especially compared to Donghun on Mixnine at the same time I can see a fair bit of difference.

I agree a lot of it comes down to personal taste between the top 2 team songs. The All Day team that won definitely had a broader appeal and was also my choice, I'd stan them too. Hangyul is only 1 month older than Dongmyeong btw so he was barely 18 for this stage (subs were korean age I presume). The whole thing with Dongmyeong not being "manly" enough was so over the top, especially with the editing. He's actually very good at fitting different concepts and styles even though he's cute off stage, and the members probably helped him blend in but not with the edits we saw. Nowadays, he actually has a lot of sass on stage! He got a lot of inspiration from Hwasa, especially when ONEWE did their covers of Mamamoo's Hip and Hwasa's Twit (their awesome as a rock songs btw) and collabed with Hwasa for their song Q. Dongmyeong is one of those idols who doesn't give a crap about gender norms which makes him very compelling to watch on stage 😊 He reminds me a bit of A.C.E in that way so I wonder if maybe his friendship with Chan influenced that somewhat 🤔

I remember when this episode came out I replayed the All Day cut so many times. You can tell their team gets along so well off stage too & I think that really helped their overall cohesion on stage too !! Also Dongmyeong in All Day- considering he's the keyboardist and sub-vocal of MAS/ONEWE, it was so amazing to me at the time that not only could he blend in with a "tough guy" concept but also keep up with the other strong dancers in his team! Since produce101 I had my eye on him but the unit solidified his place as a bias :')

I second the motion to watch Mixnine after The Unit if we don't get a release date for Kingdom. Or Street Dance of China 3. Wouldbe really fun to watch a Show with you that's focused on professional Dancers, also Lay, Jackson and Yibo are in it as Team Leaders which means a lot of chaotic fun.

btw if you have time after finishing the unit and before Kingdom starts I hope you'll check out Mixnine or YG Treasure Box. Mixnine was the show that was basically the antithesis of the Unit. (That's where the other members of A.C.E were) It also has tons of familiar faces from Ateez, Itzy, Treasure, ONF, 1team, KNK, ONEUS, CIX and sooo many more. and then yg Treasure Box was definitely a different kind of show since there was only 28 contestants but that show also has people from Treasure (of course) WEi, CIX, the upcoming bg from Rain's company, P1Harmony and more

The group that came from the unit is one of the few survival show groups that I ended up really stanning but oddly enough this is actually my first time watching the unit with you lol. I think one of the biggest faults of this show is just there's soooo many people to follow. I definitely prefer watching these types of shows afterwards because watching them when theyre airing can be super stressful.

Team "ALL DAY" definitely my favorite performance here in all THE UNIT. I agree with you, this team was a complete package. I would immediately stan if they were actually a group! ❤ They indeed looked like a legit group already! It was a little hard for me to seperate song from performance here. Like I liked 'No way' the most (by far) as a song. While I could see the performance wasn't perfect, I still thought they did great and was really shocked they ranked last. Also, the were the most live (hand held mics with hardly any backing track vocals) and I felt they didn't get any credit for that.

I think you may be right about Seyong's type of forwardness being off-putting to girls. Definitly I found it off-putting. I felt that he was good, but the attitude as if he's the best. I think you really have be to absolutly be *the best* to pull that off, and he wasn't... I certainly liked him more in these later episodes though.

I think the Unit seemed to have gathered lots of funny male idols and it really starts to shine thru from this ep on. There are some behind the scenes videos for each group for this mission and those are hilarious too. When I watched this during time of airing I wasn't too into the individual songs. I think KBS isn't quite as good at being trendy as Mnet XD. I didn't actually like "no way" as a song as it's not quite my kind of music. Jeup ranks high and so does Timoteo, then Kanto is in the middle so I think it's less of a popularity thing here. My suspicion was that the song is just not so "trendy". The group was mostly cohesive though so I think the actual performance was ok. I think the "Mine" group pulled off the song as best as they could with some people being a bit mismatched for the song and concept and then the whole issue of working around Jungha's injury. B-Joo really matched the song well in terms of his vibe and singing though so that was good. Most of all though, this group and how they stood by Jungha is one of the best embodiment of what The Unit feels like for me; a family of supportive peers. There's a lot of love on the show that's missing from many other competitions. All day team was really like a debut team! There were skilled people in all aspects and I think the people in this team were the least "unique" in a way. Like Chan and Jun have vocals that can fit most genres, and most of them can dance and style themselves to fit more genres. Even boyish Dong Myeong transformed enough to fit in with make-up and the right clothes, right? I have to say this is my favourite styling and song for Han Gyul ever. I think this won over Question also because the song is a little less niche in terms of the genre so it has more mass appeal. I didn't like Question at first because I don't like thats tyle of music but after watching this a few times I can see how well it was executed. Props to Lee Geon for almost being a vocal director in this! "My Story" was the song everyone avoided and I think the high notes was a reason why. LIke you said everyone was so nasally. I suspect it's because they were all struggling with the key and pushing their vocals. Rae Hwan was amazing on it though! Excited to see what he and Ungjae end up doing in their new project. Also this team was all "love" for Kijung. XD

ALL DAY was my favorite and QUESTION my second favorite. I understood so well when you talked about injuries because of the shoes. I'm the perfect example, I had the same shoes the two times I did STEP in PE class and unfortunately I injured myself twice. At the end, my sister said they were bad and we threw them away to buy another pair. Now it's way better but my ankle is still weak after so many injuries People really have to be cautious about the shoes they choose to do sports

All Day was definitely my favorite performance this round! I had a mutual on Twitter when the show was airing that got all salty about All Day winning because it was the "typical" boy group style or whatever but isn't that kind of the point of this show? To create a boy group that works well together and appeals to fans? They were one of those "~I only stan underrated groups because i'm special and different~" stans though so I guess it's expected xD Also, I think I mentioned in a comment previously but Hansol really came out of his shell here, once he got comfortable he was able to play around more he's just REALLY shy and like I can relate lol

This mission is my favourite. For the boys, All Day team is my pick. I love everything about it, the members, the song, the dance. Like you have mentioned, this group has harmony. Another note is that somehow Dongmyeong reminds me of Renjun so much lmao. He is also tiny but straightforward with his words. He can keep up and blend in a group full of great dancer and manlier faces. Tbh I love Hangyul’s looks in The Unit more than Produce X101. Idk why but him in here is really animalistic and mesmerising for me.
