[Reality] The Unit - Ep 7 Reaction

Comments

Hangyul's story definitely tugged at my heartstrings. He's definitely went through a lot in his childhood and I'm amazed at his outlook on it. I remember he said during a Vlive once that his happiest memory was they day he got adopted and got a family. I just really want him to succeed and do well. I was sad when IM essentially went quiet, they were a predebut project that was supposed to turn in to a 10 membered group but it ultimately was canceled. Then X1 happened and yeah.... but I'm glad he's officially part of Bae173.

I know I'm 7months late to this reaction (I'm watching this after your PD101 S2 reactions). But answer your question: Would I have stanned the Top 9 of each group from this episode...The girls? At the time I watched this series, I probably would've given them a listen. The girls that were in this line up, most of them were the ones I remembered up until this point. But Idk, I didn't have like a set list of girls I was particularly attached to throughout most of the show. The boys? At the time of watching this, I don't think I would have because quite a handful of the guys I liked at the start weren't in it. But looking at it now that I know all their faces, I think this is a pretty solid boy group. I will say, one thing I liked about The Unit over the Produce Series in terms of editing is how much they focused on the "working as a team/group" aspect. They constantly talk about working together, looking after one another, and helping each other out so no one falls behind. While they did edit in some drama (because it's still a reality show and they need tension). I love that The Unit showed a lot more of the comradery, the contestants helping each other out (vocalists teaching the weaker ones proper technique, the dancers pulling aside the slower learners to show them step by step) and generally taking care of each other. The thing is, the idol world is cutthroat and highly competitive, but a lot of them are friends with each other and many have trained together in the past. So I do believe those tears shed during elimination are real and not just for show.

Secretninja312

The charm of the Korean entertainment industry is that while it is cut throat a lot of the time, groups still come together and support one another and on reality shows such as this they form bonds and support each other because they know what it's like to be chasing the same dream. Of course they need to worry about themselves too but you can do that without pushing others down and ONLY caring about yourself, like in American programs of this nature. Even now, 3 years later, a lot of the idols that met on this show are still friends! I follow a lot of them on social media and they're always commenting on each others posts and hanging out, we love to see it~

This isn't really related to The Unit, but I was wondering if you could watch some performances and a couple of training scenes from the Chinese versions of the Produce series? (I say performances and training scenes because the Chinese versions are all about an hour or more long for each episode, which makes the final episode low key more than two hours long, *granted, most of the episodes are training, sooo yeah... hehe ) I think certain Chinese seasons are better than the Korean ones (Idol Producer, Qing Chun You Ni, Youth With You, and Produce 101 China *All titles are refereed to these respective titles) due to the production, and the personalities of all contestants, and definitely due to there being no 'evil editing'. (obviously, there are some, but I think it's only to create a little bit of drama, and the rest is just the trainees training and having fun with everyone!) *I doubt you will have time, but if you are curious, it would be so interesting to see your thoughts on the performances!!

Nova Amore

They were it. They would have been at the top the whole they were together. Yes it was rigged but they were perfect together. Every time they went on Vlive they would have millions of views. They were on the Billboard charts before they debuted and we're on Melon for months. I loved them as group and I was broken hearted when they broke up.

Erley

I still can't believe they disbanded already.. I know it will be difficult for them to be together again but still, here I'm willing to wait 😅

Sarah Mae

Thanks for the recommendation. I forgot that one was Imfact's but yes Nanana is indeed great! It's not even really my usual style but they make it work 😊 Got me going back through the rest of their discography now to make sure I didn't miss anything. Edit: I adore "She is" ❤️

Sea

awww X1 was the best and worst thing that happened to me all of my biases were there more or less and i was happy with whoever made it but then they disbanded which i knew was a 50/50 chance of happening but it still hurt TT i neeever cry over disbandments really but i actually cried a bit because it was such a shock to me because they all deserved it because they all worked hard for it in the boxing arena, the jumper guy (daewon) was mainly the only reason why i watched the show because i followed their group for a bit but they were suuuper unfortunate in their career dealing with companies closing or fraud scandals i think and embezzlement??? something serious like that and the group members (madtown) had excellent chemistry from what i remember but they were dealing with schedules and transport and such on their own like using their own cars or money or whatever, it was a messed up situation because the company was supposed to cover that for them and i felt sooo bad daewon and lee geon (and jungha XD) were friends for like years maybe since elementary or middle school because they were from the same town so daewon getting iced out like that by lee geon was kinda harsh... especially since i think daewon helped geon out a lot when he came out to be a trainee even though he wasn't really in the position to help since he also didn't have much himself (from what i remember daewon left first then geon came afterwards) i think thats why i liked daewon sooo much and watched in hopes of seeing him succeed and i was pleasantly surprised watching this episode back then because he ranked 8th XD

hanabii

Nanana by Imfact is one of my favorite songs. I recommend!

The OG_SG

Oneus and Onewe (mostly Dongmyeong) are never gonna let him live that message down! 🤣 Dongmyeong even parodied it at the end of Oneus' recent 1theK reality show. The DongDong twins (Dongmyeong and Dongju aka Xion) are the absolute cutest, and polar opposites of each other. Xion actually used to be Onewe's unofficial manager back when they were M.A.S 0094 before they joined RBW and followed them everywhere. Xion and Onewe's guitarist Kanghyun even carry each other's photo cards in their wallets. Btw, what makes this even funnier is that you had the exact same reaction as Jun from A.C.E. Jun only found out a couple of months ago on a vlive when Chan mentioned befriending Xion at a music show because he recognised him as Dongmyeong's twin and they were already friends from here. His reaction was hilarious, he was like "whaaat?!! no wonder he looked so familiar" with his classic massive surprised eyes 🤣🤣🤣 P.S. I recommend looking up the twins dance cover of Hip together. It's so cute! They also have a ton of vlives together and danced together again recently at Onewe's concert which Xion filmed a bts vlog for that he posted on Oneus' channel.

Sea

His latest dramas are The Queen- Love and War (He’s the lead!) and Perfume where he plays an idol! Both on Viki!

Jenn BL

RIGHT?!?!?

seth james

oh is he?? that’s good! i watched his interview about how big agencies approached him to be an idol and i was like YOU SHOULDVE SAID YES. but i guess he loves acting more too haha

seth james

yeah that’s why i’m like trying not to fall in love with any of these members cause i know it’s not gonna end well 😂

seth james

ya it was just so bizarre altogether LOL. i wonder if the topics were pre-cleared before shooting

seth james

yah i’m glad he was able to clear up his side but damnnn i was worried about him for a sec

seth james

ya seems like the filming for this is a lot longer. can’t wait for the next mission!

seth james

oh haha i’m glad that he’s able to keep going despite that part. i guess they wouldn’t have aired it if it was truly damaging.

seth james

I don't want to spoil you but I believe you'll gonna love the final line-up ☺️ You'll get to see more Dark Horses starting next mission and throughout the competition so I think you'll probably add more members on your current bias list 🥰

eve_ss

Lmao i just realized that xion is dongmyeong's twin. When i saw xion. I was like, i've seen him somewhere, but where. Now i think about it he was on the unit family's message video 🤣🤣

tsalis park

(Reposting yesterday's comment since the app glitched and deleted it) The one who won the male vocal round was actually Rockhyun from 100%, Yonghoon from Onewe was right after Chan. He did sit in the chair though (not sure about Chan because they don't show it). The only member of Onewe who didn't get eliminated is their vocalist/keyboardist Dongmyeong (Xion from Oneus' twin). Next week you will still see the eliminated contestants in the performance preparations sections from before the eliminations and yes they have to readjust without them after. Onewe just had a comeback last week called A Book in Memory!! (written/composed by their main vocal) 😊 I remember you said they grew a lot from the show to Regulus so I think you'd be interested to see just how much more they've grown as singers/performers in the past year since Regulus. Their vocals this comeback are superb! Edit: They just released a concert live clip for it so you can truly appreciate every part of the performance live. I hope you'll consider doing a reaction for them since you already like them as it could really help them become better known. Btw I think you probably also missed their last single Parting, which is the sequel to Regulus. P.S. Jeup (from I Can See Your Voice) and Ungjae (one of guys you said you'd bias) are both from Imfact. Imfact are still a group now if you want to check them out 😊 Their latest comeback was earlier this year called Lie (I don't know them super well though so someone else might be better able to recommend other stuff from them).

Sea

actually nothing about that ring thing is too serious, one thing you should know about the unit is that they really were like a family, all of them became good friends even till nowadays so nobody got mad at that, they were all taking as a joke and were spilling the beans just to make fun of each other like friends normally do lmao i really love this part specially because of that it's so funny to see them say all kinds of non sense and trashing their friends, that's also why the eliminations was so emotional cause they already had bonded very much and actually the elimination in the middle of the mission things its something that all survival shows do so it's not really weird

Amanda Araujo

imagine how successful x1 would be if they didn't disband 😞

Sarah Mae

yes! i don't stan them but i heard a few of their songs. their vocals are so unique and different in my opinion :)

Victoria

Ah yes! that was good!

S H

imfact jeup is such a good vocalist, but tbh all members of imfact are really talented. they just don't get promoted well sadly.

Natalie Burger

The elimination was a week before they perform or so iirc. So yeah they have developed some attachment maybe. About the rank sure unexpected result will shown later 😋 Funfact. Feeldog is the shortest member of all of them. Then euijin next 🤣🤣. It's fine tho. Still love them 🤣

tsalis park

Yes Feeldog is 167cm while Ten is 170 I think.

camille

also all your ICSYV favs are mine especially Kim Min-kyu!! He is doing so well as an actor now!

Jenn BL

I watched this when it first came out but so happy to rewatch! It is disappointing knowing the outcome 😔

Jenn BL

I personally recommend you to watch "class of lies" drama where Jun was the one of the main cast you will really like it

Joel Ashish Chowdary

So basically, the “Crying Fist” part was one of the last attempts of KBS for evil editing to make drama. LOL as you go further into the episodes you’d realize that they’ll stop trying and everything will make more sense. I think this segment is very scripted mixed with some certain truths. After this, you’d see how the people who participated here are actually still in good terms. Tbh it’s ridiculous how they raise an issue and then suddenly hug at the end, I never liked it LOL. I just got reminded with these rankings how my bias had a 180 shift since the first ranking LOL. I’m sure you’ll find more hidden gems as the show progresses, for example Jun (2nd place) and Euijin (9th place - err but this is just somewhat wishful cuz he’s my bias LOL) And btw I totally agree about Timoteo, he’s really talented and very charming but if we’re going to choose someone else besides him, there’s definitely someone better in this group.

Louie Gabiliño

I need to catch up on this but the fucking evil editing they did with junhee is just effed. I will never get over how dirty they did this man.

Lauren Freeman

Yeah I think so too. Watching the elimination clips, the newly debuted contestants or the non-yet-debuted ones didn't seem to be crying as hard or as badly affected. It's the more seasoned ones who took it the hardest because they understood the desperation of the eliminated contestants...The feeling is very different from other shows eliminations because here the whole "last chance" idea is very strongly emphasized both by the editing and also the contestants themselves

S H

Haha yeah I feel like KBS started out by trying to do evil editing (e.g. with the whole Seyong and Euijin thin for example), but it's just not what they're good at...and they gave up the evil editing along the way XD

S H

Haha yeah the boxing thing was a bit weird and I felt a bit uncomfortable with what they shared tho. It just seemed a bit not so great to talk about people smelling etc on public tv...though I do think almost all of these folks on the Unit are idols with debut experience so they know how to react and create entertainment on TV shows. I think at this point in time the rankings are still very much reflective of past popularity so though we're starting to see some people rise through the ranks and some of the early faves from the audition eps start to drop off (e.g. joo). I think the girl's winning group from the last challenge had 3 low-ranking people in it, and with the win, earned immunity. So that sent some slightly higher ranking girls out in the first elimination. On the boys side the winning group was full of high rankers anyway, so it had no effect on the elimination. I loved the rendition of Miracles in December done with the eliminated members. I guess them deciding to do that gave KBS a great opportunity to make a great ending edit as the song went well with the whole atmosphere of people leaving the dorm. I don't like that they made the group leaders announce the elimination. but I like that they showed how the remaining contestants gave the eliminated warm words of encouragement and hugs etc. I watched this so many times but always cry along when the eliminations happen. Especially this very first elimination. I think the filming for the unit is much longer than produce for example because many of the contestants were actively promoting and working while in the contest. So they would gather for the camp maybe every other week or something then have small breaks. Also probably why they drag episodes out a bit and we have fillers like the boxing thing (plus like you said that was to help lighten the mood and build character). Would I stan the lineup as of the first elimination...Actually the girls didn't stand out for me back then when this aired but I can see what you mean about the top 9 at this stage looking more like a debutable group. For the boys I think there are a few who're individually talented, at this point but you're right, looking at it now, it doesn't look like an actual group at this point so nope. I think you'll love the next mission. Lots of great groupings and the whole self-produce aspect shows another side of the contestants. You can clearly see who has the ideas and can direct/create, and who is better as a follower to follow the agency's creative direction etc. I can't wait for your reaction to the next 2 eps! It'll be fun :D

S H

Oh, Ten is definetely taller than Feeldog! 😂 I guess he's a few cms taller than Woozi and Woozi is 164cm

Nami

I had my nap when you posted this and watched it as soon as I saw it. Hahaha. Yes! Kim Minkyu from I Can See Your Voice is a very great actor now and I like seeing him on dramas and variety shows after ICSYV and yes, Jeup is the one you saw on ICSYV and he is one of my fave from ICSYV. I love his song choice because it was a hard song but he pulled it off.

arianaisventi

Also I will say everyone’s crying cause they know how much it means to one another. Like madtown disbanded whilst they were on the show, so they knew if they left that was it for them, they didn’t even have a company to go back to, which is also why in the boxing ring the white jumper guy was angry that his friend was staying at all these places and not saying anything, cause he’s legit sleeping in an office. Of course they were friendly about it, but I understand why he brought it up

JayD

In December it’s so sad to know they couldn’t do it as one cause it sounded amazing

JayD

That is one thing I could never understand about the unit, they would do the eliminations halfway through the mission. Those who had less people leave their group would have an advantage cause obviously they would have a higher total points than those with less, it was the major downfall of the unit. And believe me next episode when you see green teams practice clips of them singing miracles

JayD

I think the ranking here is just fine. I think its worse on Produce Series. Yeah everyone's talented but there are a lot more talented people who don't get because they don' visually stand out. As someone who have watched all of the Produce Season's, I think The Unit have quite fair editing and screen time. Too bad not many people watched this. Its always like that, the most populat trainee or contestants before the show start gets the top, its natural but Its just the beginning, there is a lot more happening. This show is what I look forward. 👍🏻 Thanks☺️

K

About Casper lol the women talk and that video he passed around it was kind of popular in korea and intl Twitter and sites lol its those types of videos that look pretty normal but the bgd is sound of moaning or a fancam or cooking video but after 3 seconds the screen goes black and then comes the moans 😂 Casper is China-based singer/rapper and actor now and often appears on variety shows he has almost 5Million followers. He's very actively promoting.

Cherie

Oh btw the Court revealed the manipulated trainees in November so that's why i mentioned those 3.

camille

I don't think Produce was rigged to form a better or more harmonious team. At this point 2 PD from Mnet have been sentenced to jailtime and a couple agency reps were fined too. They were definitely bought out by these agencies, especially the ones that were rigged early on because it makes no sense that they manipulate the first elimination otherwise. I liked the final X1 lineup but I can't help but be pissed because Keum Dong hyun and Goo Jungmo still deserved their place, and especially Lee Jinhyuk who was my bias and rank 3 the episode before.
